A Little Idea I Have for More NPCs

You know, I’ve been saying that for a while.
Trouble is, I can’t remember what convinced me of that. Dead Island, sure, but that’s only two games. Now I’ll be agonizing about this all night! Vampire: Bloodlines?

I never really got into shooters, more so RPGs like the Fallout Franchise. I guess half-life is an exception though. I don’t like killing people, even virtually, I try and be a pacifist in any game that allows you to do so.

It was so good - so immersive. And in fact it was monsters and very bad people, so it was an exception for me too! And the NPCs were fab (back on topic - it’s a Bootie first!)

Heh. I seem to be the exact opposite. Was a bit shrug on HL (loved Portal, though!), and always get the “Shoot the perp!” targets at the range. Isn’t it lovely we still all get along so well?

Ironically it seems like I’ll get a free HL:Alyx. So, I don’t know, hate me?

This is a good topic

I could definitely see missions about recuing survivors. Either timed for better rewards, or just clearing the area of enemies. Skip the escorting, they can find their way back. Makes it easier on the development of such missions, and keeps it simple.

Or just clearing an area of enemies, for a substantial reward like ammo, tech, mods etc.

The Rival system could work into this. Kill a specific Rival for extra XP and unique loot.

An NPC could also request a specific weapon, like a 5* AI-76. Trade it for something else, like ammo or meds. It would be a means to unload some gear you don’t want to lug around.

And you’ve got the hololenses I suppose?

Why is that? Well, the sewer … yes, but basements, mines, tunnels, underground maintenance rooms, alien nests? That is pretty cool to me. HL had a lot of that and I loved it!

I believe that, st least to some extend. Being Danish I suppose that I should be playing Hitman, but the concept simply doesn’t appeal to me at all. I have s hard time understanding why it does to anybody.

Yes, completely different situation to me too. Tried a Tom Clancy game once. Nope.

I can only speak for myself here, but the sewer specifically is rarely visually interesting, and the sameyness makes it easier to get lost to boot. Also, usually no strafing etc., so you lose a lot of your “vocabulary” for interacting with the world.

Okay, so when referring to the sewer you actually mean the sewer. Then we totally agree. I got confused because in another thread I suggested opening up the Annagruva mines. Someone (I don’t recall who) replied that nobody likes the sewer.

That would be me. I noted how on one hand that was a brilliant idea that completely hadn’t occurred to me, but on the other, ew, potential for samey tunnels.
Funny enough, there are of course those … ravines, shall we say … nearby, which perhaps solve both issues. Confined, but not drab?

I like mine tunnels and grottos. I don’t think they need to be samey if you encounter tools, phosphorus ores, elevators, personel rooms, etc. HL tunnels were magnificent due to alien lifeforms. But if we agreed on everything, it wouldn’t be surprising that we get along so well

Another thought is that they can help you by joining your team in a way that when you set out on supply runs or for fun they will follow you and help you in battles like reviving you when your down and destroying machines and collecting loot such as weapons, traps, ammo and health kits. You can have up to 6 ( including your self) in the field. They can have special abilitys like one could have a medic bag that heals you and your team passively. Another could be an explosive expert he will lay traps and fire a recoil less rifle at machines in battles(you can tell him where to place the traps) ammo guy or gal gives you ammo when you have ran out of that ammo type your using but he or she will only do this if he has that ammo on hand. You can tell them all when to attack and where to go and what to do. If they find a weapon they will say “Hay I’ve got something here” then you can access their invintory and retrieve the weapon or give it to them to use. Thank you for reading and feel free to add to my idea.

Now that you are not alone on Östertörn (after Alpine Unrest) the nature of the game has changed, and a lot of what you’re proposing makes good sense. Some of it is probably rather tough to implement (AI usually is) but as the game evolves, who knows. I played ReCore for a while, and the accompanying bots are quite good at supporting you in combat. And so was Alyx in HL (and she never died!). But I still believe, if this should happen, that the communication would be mostly one way (from the NPCs to you) as it would probably be difficult to design a “give order” system into the GUI.

Thanks for replying. This Idea has potential and it will help new players who are not used to combat in the game and have your own squad or company will give you this idea that the people of Sweden are fighting back rather than you do all the heavy lifting and gives the players emersion as well.

But so far we’ve only seen survivors on the new island, and new players have to pay their dues to get there. However, I have this funny feeling that a pocket of resistance is hiding out in the Annagruva mines

Are the mines assessable?

Nope. Not yet anyway. But one can always hope :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes one can hope for this all to be implemented to this great game😉
