The Midsummer Incident. A new Generation Zero Story

                           E P I L O G

The moon shone bright and silvery from the slightly overcast night sky and bathed the Stenmyra Sund in its silvery light. Softly gurgling and splashing, the waves of the dark water pounded the rocky beach of Stenmyrakogen, the small island off the coast of Östertörn. Apart from a few ducks, cranes and swans, nobody populated the small island. During the day only the road traffic passed over them, because the small island was a link for the bridge that led from Stenmyra on Östertörn to the mainland. Like pale fingers, the gray pieces of concrete of the blasted bridge stuck out of Stenmyra Sound.

Suddenly the bushes rustle in the underground. Two dark figures scurry in the shadows of the low undergrowth. Wait a moment? the island is uninhabited, isn’t it? But that doesn’t seem to be the case for the moment. A voice whispers:

»Psst! , be quiet.! «

On the far bank, one of the two-legged robots was patrolling. The four-meter-tall, human-like machines walked upright on two legs and shot at anything and everyone that moved. Even in the dark, they seemed to pick out a human with deadly precision.

»See a robot? «, another voice whispered questioningly.

»Yes, one of the two-legged ones and some of the dogs. «, the other voice whispered back.

»Then we don’t need to go to shore, it’s too dangerous. «

»Oh, nonsense with sauce, the tin bucket is too far away, it certainly won’t see me.«, one voice whispered.

»Why do you want to go to shore so badly? «, asked the other voice.

»I want to see what’s so washed up, maybe there’s something useful in there. «

The smaller figure raised binoculars to his head.

»Do you see something? «, asked the taller figure.

»Yeah, lots of odds and ends and driftwood. Wait a minute, there’s one. «

»What?.. give me the binoculars. ’ commanded the other voice.

That must be a dead soldier. «, the taller figure whispered.

»All the more reason to check, maybe he’s got some food, or ammunition, and if you’re lucky, a gun. «, whispered the smaller figure.

»Be careful and watch out for the robots! «, the taller figure whispered.

The smaller one slipped out of the bushes down to the beach and crouched behind a washed-up tree root. Then the smaller figure was with the supposed soldier. Checking the small figure held two fingers to the neck of the supposed corpse. She flinches and waves a hand.

»Ssst…!Hey…! He’s still alive. We have to take him with us. «

»Are you crazy? Leave him there, he’ll die anyway and besides, how are we supposed to stuff another mouth. «

»Don’t you have all the cups in the cupboard anymore? «, the other voice whispered back loudly.

»We’ll have enough to feed up him. We can’t just leave him to his fate. What kind of person are you? «

Sighing and cursing under his breath, the greater figure scurries forward in the darkness. Then two strong arms grabbed and pulled the lifeless form away from the beach without the robots noticing.

Dear friends of the Generation Zero Forum

Once again a story has come to an end and for me it is the end of a journey. For many hours, I was on Östertörn and in the streets of Stockholm. Sometimes it makes me a little sad when I write the infamous last letters under a story. As I said, it is usually the end of a journey for me.

This time it took me a year to finish the story. “Helldivers Diary”, on the other hand, I started towards the end of March 2020 and finished it including translation into English on August 14th, 2020. That was about 4.5 months. “Helldivers Diary” is twice as long (approx. 1100 paperback pages) as “The Midsummer Incident” with approx. 550 pages.

From where I know this….?? Quite simply, when I write, I write in paperback format 12 x 19 cm. So I always have an overview of how thick the story is getting. Why it took me so long now for half the fewer pages was simply because I had more time available because of Corona. However, I must add that three more stories have grown in parallel. There’s a lot going on on Östertörn.

That this story couldn’t have a happy ending was already inevitable. Because we all know what had to come at the end of what happened.

I’ve been playing this game since December 2019 and I’m still hooked. As I played it and wrote Helldivers Diary, I kept thinking about how it all started. Which may have driven the artificial intelligence FNIX to turn against their builders. In real life, there is always a risk in using artificial intelligence. What if she really develops her own consciousness and we are no longer able to pull the plug? Not even to imagine!!

I’ve been watching a lot of Swedish series on TV lately. It was great fun to at least virtually travel to the locations of the action and visit them in order to make my story appear as authentic as possible. One police series in particular caught my eye. The name of the series was “Morden i Sandhamn”.

The main location was the island of Sandhamn in the archipelago. Maybe some of you have seen them too. For my part, I noticed that the devs who created this game did a very special job of capturing the atmosphere of the archipelago islands and rendering them in the game. I see this as an extraordinary artistic achievement that always impresses me when I visit Östertörn. In order to connect to Stockholm, I placed Östertörn roughly in the area of Fågelbrolandet and Runmarö, so I could use the highway that leads from the archipelago via Nacka to Stockholm. This gave me the idea of projecting »Helldivers Diary« into a real Sweden. That was very interesting and a lot of fun.

Maybe the moderators @Zesir or @Carni can create a new category within the forum for the fanfiction stories I’ve seen here on the forum. This would make it easier for new members to find them. And I want to encourage everyone else to keep writing their stories. I’ve read a lot of good fanfictions. One of them was the book about »The last of us. « The film was also very well done.

I’ve already had a lot of requests to make a book out of it. All I can say about that, ask the great oracle. You perhaps find Ulf Kellerson or Amelie Devereux. Maybe you ask them. Maybe they know more than me.

I definitely had a great time writing this story and would like to thank everyone who helped me write it. First and foremost to my wife for her love and patience.

I hope you all enjoyed this story and immersed yourself a little further in Generation Zero.

I’ll raise my glass of beer now and drink to you all, Skål!

Long days and pleasant nights. Helldiver
