A Case for Official Mod Tools Megathread

Most people have their own opinion of what Generation Zero should be like, and what it should become in the future. There are some things that people don’t want in the game, and lots of things that they feel are missing.

I would like the developers to release some Official Mod Tools on Steam so that we can begin to add some of these things to the game ourselves. The devs would have complete permission to use the files of any mod made with this tool if they wish to implement the features of that mod in to GZ. This allows some players to create the features that they want instead of bugging the devs about them.

This thread is for people to suggest different types of tools that would be needed to make mods, as well as the types of mods they would make.

I will edit this section below to include all the features suggested…

NPC Creator
Model Maker
Quest Creator
Weapon Creator
Machine Creator
HUD Editor
Structure Creator
UI Designer
Game Mechanics Creator
World Editor
Feature Remover
Vehicle Tools

First of all, we would need tools for HUD editing, and for creating new UIs for stations or new menus.

Tools for creating new machines would also be great.

I place to create models would be needed.

Tools for creating quests and NPCs.

Tools for adding new features like food and water meters.

Tools for creating vehicles. ( this will probably the most difficult. It can be hard to get good vehicle physics in a video game. Is it possible to use the engine from Just Cause 3 for the vehicles since the games are from the same company? Or is it legal for a modder to port it over to GZ? )

A world editor for the map

Structure creators for base building.

A tool for making weapons.

A tool for removing things from the game. ( such as the weapon wheel for those who don’t like it. )

I don’t see that happing as the devs are not budging when it comes to allowing mods tho some of your ideas can be intergraded and still make sense but as we know that when they add something in they take something out to make it run smoothly or that they want it to run smoothly before allowing mods

Yes, but the way I see it, is that players could take bug fixing in to their own hands. ( for the most part, FMTEL could probably not be fixed by players. ) Players could also create mods to help it run smoother. Plus, I think the devs only have to take something out to help with the load on consoles. This would be for Steam since you pretty much can’t mod console anyways.

I admit that there is not a great chance of this happening, but the devs have said in the past that “in time, everything will be added to Generation Zero” or something like that…

good point but as you also stated

it wont be as fare to others that cant have mods so they might be looking at this in an ethical way but maybe they might add small mods that affect the game in small way

Sorry, but that’s a topic not worth to discuss about here.

The devs are the devs and avalanche is the owner of the code. Even if there would be mod support, there wouldn’t be a possibility to change everything, because this is a online multiplayer game (just with the option to play alone). Many parts of it run on the servers.

Yes, they said that once there will be everything in the game. But not everything we want.

You were talking about special tools to create weapons, structures,… Did you ever mod a game? In general there aren’t special tools for that. There is a 3d model designer and code.

It’s not easy. It’s kung fu. (and I’m meaning the original meaning of the words, not just art and fists)

Just call it a singeplayer and multiplayer game. That, at least on steam, can be run without internet with almost nothing lost. AFAIK, you’d lose the use of FMTel (which has been broken for months anyways), and APEX Connect, which literally has zero use for players. The game does not have “many parts” running on servers.

Mods have been made and used with the game with risks, worst thing being a save courruption, which the game has a chance to do by it self anyway.

I would be perfectly fine with just EULA rewrite, and thew sharing of game info (how AI wworks, drop and damage tables, etc) to make modding easier, and giving players info.

Ok, ok.
Let me say it short.
I don’t need mods in Generation Zero.
I play it because I like it (as it is).

It’s exciting that it evolves through suggestions with a chance to be realized in the game. If not, it doesn’t matter (because I like it…).
Mod-support is nothing I expect to have when buying a game, because I buy the game and not an idea what it could be through mods.

And in my opinion this discussion is senseless and useless because mods aren’t supported and will not be supported. And like I don’t expect to get such a support in the games I buy, anyone else shouldn’t expect it too in my opinion.

Be thankful for what you get or do it yourself better. And the ones who know how to do it, obviously don’t need an official support and official tools.

This “ever more” - behaviour, without doing something by self (investing real hard work) is annoying… I quit discussing here now.

I am not sure you get what I said. I do not “expect” mod support for this game. I merely think it is a very good decision that could give the game life. I have also yet to see a good reason for no mods other than problems with updates.

I DO expectt the ability to discuss mods and have access to basic in-game info. Stuff that actively helps players and improves the community.

I would rally mods less if the improvements mods made to the game “basic QoL and balancing” , were actually in the base game. We see many threads asking for balance changes and QoL that mods had done years ago. Yet we just get more 5 dollar weapon packs.

The good ol’ “well why don’t YOU make something better”. Not to mention mods LITERAllY let you do this.
Not sure where you got the idea anybody here was not thankful at all either.

Sorry, that didn’t go in your direction.
It’s just… There are so many who want this game to be like other games or to have features of other games instead of making the best of what we have.

I guess there already was another topic about mods and I made the same mistake of sharing my thoughts.

Dot.
