Game Won’t Launch Unless I Clear the Cache Folder

My game refuses to launch. Like the topic tittle says, it will only launch if I manually delete the contents of the cache folder. I tried verifying the integrity of my files and I tried reinstalling the game. The last two options don’t work. Deleting the cache every time is the only solution.

Any idea what’s causing this?

Which system do you play on?
If PC, what are your specs?

I play on PC.

Intel i9-9900k
RTX 4070
64GB 3200mhz RAM
1TB Boot SSD
2TB Mass Storage SSD

Which Cache folder do you exactly mean?
What happens, if you don’t delete it?
Any error message?

Did you use any mods on GZ in the past?

I’m referring to the cache folder in

C:/Documents/Avalanche Studios/GenerationZero/Cache

The game refuses to launch unless I delete the cache files. I just get the error message that says:

"GenerationZero_F has stopped working”.

I have used mods in the past and I assumed they were the source of the issue, so I uninstalled them, but no luck.

To get sure you shouldn’t just uninstall the mods and the game, but also manually delete every related folder (of avalanche, GZ, the mods,…)

Last but not least you never know if there isn’t some modded data still left inside the savegame file which corrupts your game.

That’s strange, because inside the cache folder are stored only images for the main menu, nothing else.

You can open those files in MS Paint.

If you not already tried this: You could make a copy of the cache folder save it somewhere else, and then delete the original cache folder and try starting the game. If that was not the issue you still have the cache folder to restore.

But most often it’s the savegame-file that is corrupted with mod data which hinder a correct restart of the game.

I tried starting fresh. I made a backup of my save file, turned off Steam Cloud, deleted all folders and the game STILL refuses to unless cache is deleted. I don’t know what to do anymore.
