Game won't load/crashes after April update (FIXED)

(For a fix that worked for me please read Edit 2 below)

Platform: Windows 7 64bit SP1 - kept updated

Steps To Reproduce: - After the patch, the game starts with a black screen and won’t load. If you hit the escape key a number of times after waiting 10 or 15 seconds, the game will then start. The game settings etc are all accessible and no problems at this point.

If you then hit continue or select a character if you have more than one, the game will go to black screen and after a few seconds crash to desktop. However, If you press and hold escape then hit continue, the game will load but is unplayable due to what seems like huge lag and then will freeze and crash to desktop after a few seconds.

Another player posted this ‘fix’ which I can confirm works for me - If you press and hold escape and then click continue, then when in-game, keep the escape key held down and move left or right briefly on a connected controller then release the escape key, the game runs perfectly and I ran around for a few minutes without a problem. (if it crashes after longer than that I don’t know) I for one however can’t play a first person shooter on a controller so this is not a fix for me in any way at all.

I have checked file integrity in Steam, even deleted the game and save game folder and reinstalled the game entirely but it made no difference.

Before the patch the game started and loaded fine.

Edit - After getting into the game by holding down the escape key (any other key may also work but I haven’t tried) and then while still holding down the key, move a little anywhere on the map using a controller, the keys are then fully active along with moving around using the controller. As soon as I move the mouse however, the game freezes and then crashes to desktop. I have tried this three or four times and it happens every time.

Edit 2 - I had read elsewhere on here that one or two people had fixed the same issue I’m having by installing Windows 10. I have just upgraded to Windows 10 and GZ starts fine now and doesn’t crash when I get in-game and move the mouse. It won’t suit everybody to do this as it’s a pretty drastic way of fixing a problem the patch introduced but, in my case I was going to do it anyway at some point so decided now was as good a time as any. I haven’t at this point played more than just a few minutes.
