How to set up cross play on pc/xbox

Me and my friend want to play coop I’n generation zero but he had the steam version and I have the Xbox one version
I spent far too long trying to figure out how to get cross play working to no avail
I’m pretty sure crossoplqy is possible between Xbox and windows 10
Can anyone help?

Crossplay only works betweens xbox and microsoft gamepass unfortunately.

So If they have the steam version it will not work.
