Rivals are bugged when you kill them in an multiplayer game but have the same named one in a single player game too. I had and still have 6 rivals in my single player. They even level up (but they have no name and they are not showing on the map).
I think it happens when you have a rival spawned in a singleplayer game and you dont kill them. Then when you join a multiplayer game and you kill a rival with the same name there then it also affects your singleplayer game (but the rival is still alive there, but he is now invisible and has no name).
Right now I have 6 bugged and invisible rivals in my singleplayer savegame.
A few more screenshots showing the problem. Also it seems that no more new rivals are spawning now, cause of rivials already existing on the map. But I tried to find them by remembering where they were before joining a multiplayer game, but so far I didnt manage to find any of them.
I can confirm that the rivals are bugged and nowhere on the map. After playing hours I didnt find any of them and I checked everywhere. They still level up. Worse is that the same named rival cannot spawn now, but other rivals are still spawning. Till that bug is fixed I strongly suggest that you kill any rival left before joining a multiplayer game, cause worst case the map will fill up with more and more bugged rivals.
The plan was to not kill them (yet). To have a bunch of them on them map and then go on a rival killing spree afterwards. Also cause you can track them on the map, makes them easy to find, so why bothering killing them as soon as they spawn. But I guess cause of a bug (I think they use the same value/number/pointer/name internal on the code for single/multiplayer rivals) forces you to kill them now before joining your friends.
Run into this bug last night playing. I suspect actual Rival are not invisible, they are ghost markers of fallen Rivals. Dont have video of this.
Also this has never happened in my solo play. Many of the bugs in this game is related to multiplayer / network issues.
It was Rival we targeted on purpose and 30-45min later we saw this Rival icon on that area. Went investigate and it was not there. But did remember we killed it there. And maybe these ghost icons follow normal patrol routes of AI.
Not so long ago I’ve had similar issue with Reaper. Crucial data was lost in time, so I’ve skipped it.
It was MP and I was guesting.
We were grinding for Reaper at Farmlands and I’ve had to travel to Archipelago (I believe it was “The Hunter” quest). I was still there when Reaper emerged without name. When we arrived to the location, I’ve didn’t see it, while host had it. For the Host the battle was as usual, except for me.
Now it becomes interesting - neither I could see it (and couldn’t damage it directly), not it could directly do anything to me, even Thermobarric Blast was ignored. But I was able to inflict damage with explosives I’ve had with me, including X-12g flechette that been exploding mid-air. Also Reaper would still “feel” my presence, since it was dumping pile after pile of ticks - and that’s how I could approximate it’s placement. Hounds were “usual”.
In the end we defeated it, but no loot for me
