How old the game is does not change the timeline.
If you start this game today for the first time it’s Cataclysm day (November 10th, 1989)
But you can find dates in the lore further along the story upto march 1990 (resistance missions)
It doesn’t make much sense any more. Originally the mainland was Nov 1989 and Himfjäll was Dec '89.
Then FNIX bases came and the Resistance update was 1990, then Soviets landed so it evolved over time, but to the new player they get this weird mess of timelines and content. Where they find content near the start that wasn’t supposed to arrive until after the main storyline is over.
So it’s still 1989 sort of. But not really.

Yes, that’s a thing that is most disturbing on all the updates and revamps.
Those who played from beginning lived the changes.
Those who started later had/have to live with the changes without really knowing and feeling how it was before.
Sad that the devs didn’t include the changes into the story in a way that for example the landfall stuff (revamps, soviets) is locked behind a certain mission progress. If you reach that, there comes a small “cutscene”, like when you start a new game, that introduces you like “3 months later…” + the update-intro-video.
I’m sure I once made a suggestion for that…
