Known network issues causing crashes?

Hey there!

So I’m getting quite a lot of disconnectivity when playing co-op in other people’s games, and I get it that this happens from time to time but comparing with my mates it still seems that my game in particular bugs out more so often.

Typically what happens is that we’re playing like normal and then I’m kicked out of the game after 5-10 mins or so. It happens all the time. I do have a stable wired broadband fibre connection, and it’s not like I’m constantly losing access to the internet or something. But even like so I’m beginning to suspect that I have something off in a networking/connectivity area…

Some online games recommends you to open certain ports for the game, or to forward ports in your router, or to check the firewall, but for Gen Zero I’m not capable of finding any particular information regarding what you can do to minimise risk for losing connection.

For example, EA has a list of their online games and which ports they recommend to open for each game for maximum connectivity but what about Gen Zero?

Can anybody help with this? Are there any ports you recommend to check, or any other setting I might have missed?

Any help would be appreciated…

Edit: I’m on PC, with all DLCs installed. Here is my dxdiag:

Ok so I found some information out there, but it is from a third party website and I’m not sure how reliable the following information is. Could someone at the studio, perhaps @SR_Kimchi or someone else, verify this information? Taken from here: https://portforward.com/generation-zero/

Any mods/cheats you’re using?

Also, what is the exact error message shown to you when you get booted back to the main menu?
Is it:“kicked by host” or “you got disconnected”?

Former is self explanatory, latter, in the other hand, pops up when host’s game crashes or host quits. So far, these two reasons have been sole reasons for me when i get booted back to the main menu when playing MP as a client (joined someone else). Very rarely i’ve gotten disconnected from Steam or my own net connection drops but then, i’m not booted to main menu but instead remain in game but other people are gone.

Edit: I do not use any mods or cheats - never have.

@Aesyle there is typically no error message, and the game doesn’t crash hence no crash reports are being sent.

What usually happens is that I’m playing in another person’s game, and they receive a message that I exited the game (which I hadn’t), while at the same time I continue playing in their world but without being able to interact with anything in the game.

Here are two typical examples of what might happen (recorded pre-Alpine Unrest but with exactly the same things still happening)

And here is an example of a rarer occurrence in which enemies continued being animated while attacking a player that on my end had glitched out. That player’s character was even shooting his gun at random intervals (even though the actual player was not). Please notice that the others in that session were continuing to play like normal, only with me having (apparently) exited the game.

I very rarely play MP so I have very little experince with these issues but I have a question that would provide further insight into your issues.

Are you playing on Wifi or via ethernet cable and are the wificard and networkcard really up to date on drivers?

This reminds me of a glitch where a buddy and I were chilling in a field, and they started running around wildly, firing the weapon and getting tossed around. It turned out they were fighting a pack of dogs, but only they could see them. I’ve also found robots that they couldn’t see, but there were frozen or marching on the spot. Sometimes the network does seem to get out of sync, though it is pretty rare.

Have you had a look at netstat or other networking tools to see what Generation Zero is trying to use?

Had this happen as well. On PC.

@Znurrad Thanks for that question. I have a wired ethernet connection (Killer E2400), and I checked its drivers and updated it. Don’t know if this could be my issue but I will troubleshoot in-game to let you know. Fingers crossed!

Sorry for resurrecting this post but I have been having the exactly same issue with v1817101. Over the weekend 3 friends and I were doing a charity stream and different members were experiencing this issue. I had it happen the most often. I did open the ports per the portforward website due to lack of official information. All of my drivers are up to date, I am using wired gigabit internet, and I’ve reinstalled and verified my install. Only thing I haven’t done is move it off my secondary drive (internal) to my SSD but I run all my other games from my secondary drive and none of the other games have this issue.

I’m glad you did bring this topic back up, this has been happening to me on pc almost since launch. If I’m hosting a game or playing alone everything runs fine but if I’m a client, everything the originator of this post talks about happens to me, and I don’t know I’ve left the game untill someone in the group tells me I have or if I notice something weird in the game like mechs walking in place or being unable to loot boxes or open doors. I only get a crash report if I have a hard crash from the game or I’ll get a message saying I’ve been disconnected from the session if the host leaves or is disconnected somehow. Hope this is part of the quality of life patch that is coming up. I have noticed this though, playing with one friend seems to have gotten more stable for me but anything over that has made the game hellish to play in co-op.

Tried again with the new v.1829870 that came out on 27 Apr and the disconnects continued to happen. Normally I would join a friend of mine and I was the one disconnecting, however, this time we had him join me and he started to experience the same disconnects. There didn’t seem to be any triggering event for them though nor any crash. I’d see him leave and he couldn’t interact with items. I would then have to invite him back and we could continue adventuring.
