Machines in Bunker Wall [Video]

I know there are already topics about this, I just wanted to show that it’s still an issue, and thought I’d record the glitch happening. I’ll be including my own theory as to why this happens below, based on some 550 hours of playtime.

My theory is that they can spot you inside bunkers, because the hollowed-out terrain that the bunker room setpieces are placed in never actually creates it’s own interior, so if a Machine is close-by they can still hear you and attempt to find you.

When you don’t look at an enemy, something with the game’s rendering causes them to be able to phase through walls to get into the hollowed-out terrain space containing the bunker, and from there they can see you because the outside walls of the bunker rooms are transparent.

But they can’t reach you, so you’re stuck in combat, unless for some reason you manage to get away, in which case they can phase through. I’ve confirmed this before, by either going into the menu or tabbing out while an enemy is outside a house, then returning to the game only to find them having phased inside.

I’d love to see other people’s theories and experiences with this, hoping to solve this thing

It may be worth noting in that context that the issue where if you’re in the type of barn that is one large room (no stairs etc.), you also still get hunters appearing behind you in the barn.

Yes, I’ve noticed this as well. When I did the mission Colonists, with the trapped Hunter inside the barn, I waited outside. When I brought up my inventory, it managed to phase outside and kill me. This issue seems related to most medium-sized enemies like Seekers, Runners and Hunters.

Yup, Xezr, your post pretty much confirms my experiences as well. Underground bunkers are not self-contained “incidences” of gameplay world - they are part of the overall game world and so obviously the AI thinks you’re close by - well… simply because you are, in terms of latitude and longitude. I don’t think its a case of the AI “seeing” you through the walls, they just know you are close.

To fix this would be a lot of work I am thinking. There’s two routes the devs could take:

  1. Make underground places entirely separate locations from the above ground world which would probably require the player to enter through a closed door and accept a few seconds delay with a loading screen. or…

  2. Write a bunch of code that closes off all underground spaces with a “wall” separating them from the surface - then draw this closed box environment around every single underground bunker in the game - with a hole in the “wall” for doors.

Neither is an easy fix as far as coding is concerned.

Definitely a very plausible theory @Zesiir.

I think you can even see that runner’s red scan beam on the installation just before, and at the moment, you turn on your flash light. And also through the narrow seam in the floor in front of that gas tank a little later.

Machines phasing through walls is an issue no matter where you are, it seems, but maybe this explains part of the problem:

Just before the update I was fooling around in Torsberga Fort with this glitching bug that I read about in the Terrain Holes thread and I wanted to double check if that bug still exists after the update.

But before doing so I read your post and that got me thinking … “Could it be possible that this glitch is present in all the these ‘stair rooms’? That it’s a little error in the geometry that got “copy/pasted” all over the place?”

So I checked out several bunkers and it seems that, at least that, is the case.

I didn’t check literally all of them but there are bunkers that don’t have that ‘stair room’ (at least, as far as I could see). So if anyone remembers if it happens only in bunkers that have this ‘stair room’ then this specific glitch might very well be the cause. Assuming that machines can actually fall through like the player can, of course.

There may be similar spots elsewhere so maybe we should all start humping the bunkers like crazy

Edit: Just in case it’s not clear from the video how to do it: Walk into that “left” corner until you sink a little. And then jump.
