My thoughts on the game after ~15 hours of co-op

Hi all, so I wanted to share my feedback on the game so far to share my experiences and some suggestions.

First of all, it was such a refreshing and fun thing to jump into, an interesting premise, really fun combat different to the games I’ve been playing lately, and killer, sometimes giant robots, freaking awesome!

After 15 hours though I, and my co op partner have both expressed that the game is feeling a little, well it’s hard to say, but the compulsion to play is fading and it’s getting a touch boring perhaps.

We feel like in part it’s due to how we both now have level 6 experimental sniper rifles, this makes even tanks really not that much of a challenge, groups of smaller enemies are the ones putting us at risk more. Don’t get me wrong, tank fights are still fun, dodging rockets that explode, or dispense mines or stuff like that is still lots of fun.

We both think that it should probably have been later that we got these rifles. It was a whole lot more challenging and time consuming fighting tanks before with lower level hunting rifles, and a lot of fun came from that. Having them be something you got another 15 hours or more into the game for level 6 would be a really good change I think.

I also think there should be more combat in urban areas, after all it’s guerrilla warefare, fighting in random fields and forests is fun, however we were at one supply run mission earlier where we had to fight a couple enemies in a small town, dodging around building and flanking, it was awesome, and gave that refreshing, fun experience hit again like when we first started. I feel like there’s too much in open areas, and more densely set out towns or even a big city would really be good, as well as more enter-able buildings, maybe ambushes of tanks in some towns so you had to run from building to building while they gassed or bombed large areas trying to sweep out survivors.

There might be more like that later on, but looking at the map it all seems pretty similar, though we don’t have that island dlc.

The inventory system is something else that is frustrating both of us, specifically in safe houses. Only 100 slots, and all in that vertical row is really hard and time consuming to organize. I think more slots and a larger grid is a change that needs to happen.

Stuff not automatically stacking in your inventory, and in your hotbar, is also pretty frustrating, manually having to combine your inventory health kits with your hotbar ones to free up room is pretty annoying to deal with. A couple more slots for throwables would also be nice.

I’d also like the ability to reload on the run, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, and I don’t know which way it’s supposed to be.

Of course more robot types would be great, something even bigger than tanks or more flying robots would be really cool additions to mix things up.

The missions so far are starting to feel repetitive, and the story seems interesting but also not really all that present in the gameplay, I can’t put my finger quite on why, but it feels like it could definitely be improved.

Some of these changes should be easy to make, and probably are coming, but others, like more urban based combat are probably going to be difficult to do since the map is already layed out, unless later in the game there is more. If so please let me know as I’d really look forward to that.

I feel like hacking could be changed a lot as well to make it more fun, right now it’s sadly not all that useful, I had been expecting a lot more. Later level hunters also seem to flank a lot less, early on they would run way, way around you and be hard to keep track of which was awesome, but now they all seem to be a lot less active.

Also, if the devs don’t read this often and it’s better to send feedback somewhere else let me know, I want to see this game get even more fun and compelling, I’m hoping that something mixes it up and helps cut this sort of bored feeling I’m already starting to feel as I’m sure there are loads more fun moments to have. It just feels like we’ve already hit a bit of a plateau.

Another edit, a key to quicky take all from a lootable item would be a nice addition. Robot despawning seems fairly random and often happens too quickly, so being able to grab stuff fast and sort after would be nice.

Also, perhaps part of this is that enemy group sizes seem pretty large/challenging for solo play, but with a second player it’s not very common that we have to retreat or start to get overwhelmed, maybe there need to be yet some larger groups based on the number of co op players, like a tank and a half dozen hunters, or something like that which might fight in a more strategic way somehow.

edit: Oh yes, mountain bikes, a bike that did better off road, and had the ability to jump over small branches and things would be a massive improvement, the current ones are awful off road.

Many good points there, but the majority of them have already been raised many times. It seems unfortunate to have the more uncommon ones drown in that sea of repeats.

Not sure I understand that one though, there are so many enterable buildings that people complain about them getting samey.

If you mean “building types”, that gets better on DLC island.

You can’t reload while sprinting. Kind of annoying, but makes sense, otoh.

tl;dr
The only unique suggestion I have found reading all of this the wish for more urban combat.

The enterable buildings thing comes from the area where we were experiencing more urban style combat, it really felt like there should have been more that you could go into in that particular area, but I do agree there are lots of the same building, I think more variety is what I want.

It does feel like the buildings have more planned for them but right now they aren’t even good loot locations sadly. We just started skipping them entirely.

Ah, I see, so the times I have reloaded when springing are the bug, not vice verca. That helps clarify it.

I found that often if you start a reload and spring and it works, as long as you don’t press additional keys the reload completes, but if you try to go left or right instead of sprinting forward it cancels it.

I’d be happy with a 50% increase to reload speed while sprinting, I think that would be a nice compromise.

For me sprinting reliably cancels reloads. BUT the actual reload seems to take less time than sound and animation suggest. From the top of my head I’d guess you can skip the last quarter of the whole thing and still successfully reload.

So you want to be able to reload while sprinting PLUS it taking less time? :grinning:

Hi, i think this is not a bug. If you stand still you can sprint for a few seconds. After that you still run but not as fast. And if you keep holding the sprint button pressed you never start to sprint again. During actual sprinting you can not reload. But during running after the sprint you probably can.
And I absolutly agree that this is annoying. The ability to reload while sprinting would fit well as a skill into the game.

Interesting, that actually works.

Your compromise is the faster reload skill in the game.

Reloading while sprinting benefits “run and gun” type of gameplay. GZ is not “run and gun” game and i’d hate to see GZ turn into one.

Obviously he used the wrong word. Not an increase of the reload speed but the reload time by 50%. So the reload takes longer while sprinting. That would be fine for me. Much better than the interuption now.

Yeah, that’s what I meant, was still waking up when I was replying. Even if the time it took to reload was doubled I think that would be better than not at all while you’re sprinting.

I agree with Dantec that it would be a good addition as a skill instead of across the board too perhaps, learn to reload with an x amount penalty while running.
