NMT Cellphone network

Had to laugh when i encountered this mission:

Difficulties with radio comms so switching over to NMT…

Does anyone remember that cellphone network? Was in wide use here in Norway even into the days of GSM as the coverage was better. All analog and very insecure as you could eavesdrop on it with a ordinary radio scanner in the 450 and 900mhz range.

Ofcourse scanners were not legal here in Norway back then but that did not stop us from driving over the border to Sweden and smuggle them together with all the snus and beer the car could carry… Still have fond memories of a trip to Østersund with that intent only.

I think i still have some recordings i made eavesdropping on truckers calling sex hotlines at night… Those were the days!

I remember the first cell phones in Denmark using NMT as well…

… and I remember a minister of transportation (Arne Melchoir) being very excited about it in an interview (speaking very loud and slowly hoping that the receiving end would hear him better). Never put technology in the hands of politicians … :joy::denmark:

I feel like my generation’s equivalent of this was listening to your mate get flirty on the group chat Skype call with his lady friend after he thought everyone else disconnected. We then sat there for like 20 minutes being very uncomfortable trying not to laugh our kidneys out of our bodies until we finally cracked and just absolutely lost it. Friendship ruined. :joy:
