Open Letter To Development Team

Hello Development Team,
Please forgive me for being blunt with my opinions below. I have NO place else to share this with you. It will be long & please be patient with me I wear my emotions on my sleeve, use a train of though writing style that is out-of-date & do not often express my-self well in the written word.

I love the Generation Zero I purchased on Xbox the end of May even with the bugs it was the best co-op player vs AI game on Xbox, the best Machine vs Human game I have EVER played on console. It was dark & eerie, it was hard, it had a unique inventory system that made sense, it had a progression system with skills that made you feel like you accomplished something. Updates started rolling out bug fixes came, the development team was active here in the forums, on social media & in the company streams talking with players. Then came the 1st major new content update with the Island DLC the roll-out could have been better but DLC roll-out is not a strong point for some companies not just this one (the difference being given time this one fixes them). Bug fixes came again… Fast-forward…

This update gave the players two features that were very much requested & that I was very much opposed to (crafting & major inventory overhaul) I was & am in the minority here in the forum PC & Console players alike love these two changes based on feedback I have read here & in social media so I am going to make two requests here:
One will you please keep crafting to a minimum & Two can you give us an option to use the old inventory system for those (though in the minority) who were fine with it as it was?

Again I do so hope that this is seen for what it is a positive overall post from someone that still loves the game & who is putting much faith in this team.

Thank you for your time & for reading this & again forgive my poor ability to express my-self in the written word.

Stay Safe Fellow Gamers,
SPP

I’ve not given the new inventory time to make a full decision yet, but my first instincts were; “Wow, this looks so much better.” until I had to use it in combat, and then I was more like “Aargh! Why does it take so many clicks?”

I’ve a feeling I’ll get used to it, but while it looks better, I too find it (initially) more cumbersome.

Yes looks good but on console the time during combat gets you dead very fast…Clicks on PC have got to be easy comparatively. Anyway hope they can let those of us who liked the old system have it back. I am very supportive of being able to customize things such as this in games.

Xbox player here, I’ve long felt that the UI in general could be better thought out for console players. Even the previous iteration felt designed for mouse / click & drag rather than a controller.

Well, unless there will be new missions that will require to craft something, you don’t have to use crafting at all.

Thus keeping it to a minimum! Glad you agree :+1:

I have to agree the inventory part, the new inventory is not appropriate for this game, only for RPG games with pause function.
I doubt they will change it or have a multi inventory option.
Nevertheless you have my vote.

With so big changes implemented, it would be very strange if they weren’t reading this. :slightly_smiling_face:

I hope so but I fear that I am so outside the majority that I am ignored…

I can understand you fear that. However, if your ideas are good and the right people read it, that might get a lot done. Great ideas often come from one person, not the majority.
We just have to remember that the dev’s have the final word anyway in how their game turns out.

I am fine with crafting and the inventory. I am kind of happy with the bigger inventory size. :grinning:

I see one big issue with reverting back to grid system: the new inventory weight system.

In a nutshell, old grid system was converted to weight system with 1:1 ratio. Meaning every item that took 1 slot in old grid system, takes 1 kg (unit) in new weight system.
E.g:
1x Field radio = 1 slot or 1 kg
2x Field radios = 2 slots or 2 kg
240 rounds of 7.62mm = 1 slot or 0.960 kg
120 rounds of 7.62mm = 1 slot or 0.480 kg
1 round of 7.62mm = 1 slot or 0.004 kg

The current max weight limit is 80 kg (units). And you can exceed that by 20 kg (units) as well.
Converting that to old grid system adds another 50 slots to your inventory screen, which fills out entire screen, leaving no room for other needed parts.

Some image editing and here's how it would look like

Yes, new inventory system looks more complex than old grid system. And it may take some time to get used to. But as the old saying goes: “When going gets tough, the tough get going.” :slightly_smiling_face:

Personally, I think the new inventory is ok. It will take some getting used to, and IMO it might require a few tweaks and fixes. I mainly have 2 “issues” with it.
1- We NEED a hotkey to swap ammo types in weapons! Never mind realism or any of that, do it for the flow of combat and the fun of gameplay.
2- It would be very smart to add a prompt when recycling weapons and attachments. Its way too easy to click the wrong button and end up scrapping a 5* or 6* weapon that you spent forever searching for.

I like the crafting, and I like that you don’t have to engage in it if that’s not your thing. Picking up components and using the workbenches is completely your choice. Modding clothes is a good place to start, and a smart way to bring back the clothing stats. My problem with the original clothing stats was that it wouldn’t let you wear your favorite clothes and still make use of them, but that’s fixed now. Personally I hope they keep crafting on the inventory level. Some people have requested base building, but I think that would be a bit too much.

i agree, not a fan of crafting. But at least it isn’t something you have to engage with, it’s only for modding clothes. i like actually having to loot areas for proper supplies rather than picking up bits of plastic to make a RDS for my rifle, but it’d be nice for people who want it. but i do prefer the new inventory system.

Wait a sec.

I can hardly believe what I am reading here.
I agree with NJR87 here.

For a long time the community has been crying that the original inventory system was clunky, cumbersome and tedious to use.
A cry for change…

And now it has changed, people are yelling to undo the changes?
Sounds to me like none of you has any idea what you actually want - only a few do, it seems.

I tried the game yesterday for nearly 10 hours straight - on PS4 - and it took me only a short while to get used to the new system and it works great!
It’s performance also seems improved compared to the old system. Faster and less laggy.

And yes it has a few downsides and bugs right now. I agree on that.
Weapon Swapping is broken right now and will be fixed.
Scope Quality will be fixed too, I am sure.
Ammo allocation should be easier too, which I am sure the Devs will look in to.
But I hardly needed an ammo swap.

I do miss the Grid from the previous system, for its clarity, however the sorting options in the new system are such an improvement.

Crafting… I am not fully decided on this, but I do like things to loot and the new system allows for that.
It is a bit more Fallout (4)-ish right now and I am one who likes that.

Double the carry capacity compared to the old system, twice the storage capacity.

And yet people complain about it. Un-f-ing-believable! :expressionless:

Maybe it is isn’t the same people. I never once complained about the old system and find the new system useless. The old system was fine. No one needs to carry everything around the whole time. That’s the point here.

Weight? That is just silly not realistic. Did 8 ever not want to take all the ammo I needed? No

I don’t know if it’s a good idea to constantly tell developers what to do, especially when it comes to gameplay and story.

If crafting is part of their vision, they should add it. If meeting with survivors is part of their vision, they should add them. If base building isn’t part of their vision, they shouldn’t add it.

Because I think it wouldn’t be good for the game if they added in a half-assed base building system or cancelled a story ark they are passionate about just to stop the community from complaining.

Quality of life stuff like inventory design, character logs, respecc options, difficulty levels, etc., are things that we as community can make demands about imho, but I think would shouldn’t move beyond suggestions and inspiration when it comes to gameplay systems, story and lore.

I said most of this in my post both were request & the company is RIGHT to give people what they want

So I am glad that you & @NJR87 agree with me. Thank you.

I agree that is why I ask polity & stated that this was just my minority opinion. Glad we are on the same side here.
