I’ve already tried asking about this on the Generation Zero subreddit and Discord, but didn’t get any response, so I figured I’d give it a shot here. This is actually my first post on this forum, so apologies if it’s not in the right section!
Over the years I’ve heard from a few other players that they’ve seen shooting stars in Generation Zero. I think I might have caught a glimpse of one about a month ago while playing multiplayer, but with all the tracer fire and explosions going off, it was hard to be sure.
Since then, I’ve been spending at least an hour every in-game night in photo mode, watching the same patch of sky, hoping to catch one on camera… but so far, nothing. Do they exist?
Does anyone know if there’s a specific time of night, direction, or even a region in Östertörn where they’re more likely to appear? I’ve mostly been hanging around Ashpholmen, usually on the roof of the garage since it has a clear view and minimal light pollution.
That said, it’s actually been really relaxing just taking a break when I get back from work, looking up at the stars, cranking up the sound, and listening to all the ambient noises around me. I highly recommend trying it, it’s a surprisingly peaceful and meditative part of the game!
Any tips would be greatly appreciated. At this point, I just want to know if I’m chasing shadows or if this is actually a legit feature of this awesome game!
Thanks in advance!
I’ve never actually seen a shooting star in-game, but I imagine capturing one in a photo is as tricky as photographing lightning. It might be better to record a video while stargazing in-game. Missing it because of a reaction-time delay while taking a photo would be a bummer.
The Perseid (Per-see-id) meteor shower is one of the most dramatic things to see in the night sky between July and August, and is a highlight of many meteor hunters’ calendars due to its high hourly rate and bright meteors.
In 2025 the Perseid meteor shower is active between 17 July and 24 August. The shower will peak 12 August.
If one of the devs is into astronomy I would assume that the upcoming weeks would provide a fair chance to see a shooting star tear over the night skies of Östertörn.
Or you could go outside, look up, and see the real deal

Thanks @Gysbert, good advice. I’m on Xbox so I’m limited to 45-second clips, which makes capturing things like shooting stars a bit of a challenge. That said, my trigger finger’s not bad😄so if I’m lucky and quick enough, I might be able to grab a screenshot right as it happens!
I do agree though, it’s probably like trying to photograph lightning, half timing, half luck. I might try leaving a clip recording while stargazing just in case one shows up. Missing it because I was fiddling with the capture button would be such a pain after waiting for it. Hopefully I get a shot soon!
Thanks for the heads up @IanForce !!! The Perseids are a favourite of mine in real life and I completely forgot they were due, and I’ll be keeping an eye out in August for sure.
In game though, I’ve tried to spot familiar constellations in Östertörn’s sky, but I can’t seem to recognise any of them. Not sure if they’re based on real star maps or just stylised for the game, but it’d be amazing if the devs slipped in a few real ones for us stargazers to spot (there’s one in the east that looks a little like Orion’s Belt). Would love to catch a shooting star in game during the same time the real Perseids are active, that’d be a nice little crossover!

I’ll be watching the skies both in real and virtual worlds!!!

Same here
And I’ve seen a lot of rain but no rainbows. I’ve looked for northern lights on a clear frosty night. I wondered if the devs depicted the moon correctly or mirrored as seen through a telescope. And I’ve been looking for meteorites like you
But then … it is just a game and even though the devs did a spectacular job on the surroundings, I’m sure that their development efforts have mostly been on game action.
Good luck looking for shooting stars whether in GZ or IRL. And don’t forget to wish for something
You never know… Like they did the instability indicator (gnome ticks)… But I’d guess, if they once introduced those shooting stars, northern lights or rainbows, they probably will have removed them now to reduce system load.
In the past the weather also was much more diverse and changed more often. Lightning storms, with strong wind and heavy rain or sudden really thick fog… I miss those.

What update had that weather? Do you think if someone had a launch disc they could find a shooting star?
Some of the best sky boxes out there in this 2019 game, so many beautiful skies in GZ, but no rainbows for me either! I’ve also stood around on those clear, frosty nights hoping to catch a glimpse of the northern lights but to no avail. I’ve been curious about the moon too, trying to map the craters.
I’m still hunting for that elusive meteor streak!
You’re right though, while the devs have clearly put a ton of love into the atmosphere and environment, most of their focus understandably goes into the core gameplay.
Still, it’s fun to hope and even better when a tiny surprise hopefully appears in the sky. Good luck to you too, both in GZ and under the real night sky. The only wish I’ll be making if a see one is for a sequel to this brilliant game!
