The Mkay Magazine Treasure Hunt

With the last update we found a Mkay magazine on a building in west Aspholmen. Now I know i have seen at least one on another location, but I haven’t made a notation of that. But for completeness I like to find other instances of this Magazine. So, if you know or come across a 2nd magazine location, I would not mind if you would reveal the location on here. :coffee:

Wasn’t there one at the location where we got the Uncle thick stuff? (South east östervik?)

Couldn’t find one there. The hunt continues. :coffee:

There are a couple of places I don’t travel through very often, and that are all the bunkers.
It might well be I saw a MKay Magazine there. So have a look out if some of you explore those.

That’s the best photo I’ve seen yet of the MKAY magazine! Do we know the name of the developer in the photo? The title “MKAY” is likely a play on the pronunciation of “Okej”, the real magazine from the 1980s it’s parodying. Thanks to this photo, I was finally able to get a proper English translation of the whole cover:

MKAY
HE SPLITS THE SUPERGROUP!

(Pink banner headline)

12 COOL PATCHES

(“märken” can also mean “brands” or “badges,” but in a music mag context, likely patches or stickers) or game patches?

WASD

QQ DOWN

LUDO FEAST

KAIROSVISCH

TRISTE SYSTER (Sad Sister, possibly a band name parody)

FREDRIK

DONNY’D

SOUND REPLY

BUZZ BABY

W.L.K.

(Bottom headline: årets artist MITTUPPSLAGET i helfärg)

Artist of the Year

CENTRE SPREAD in full colour

On the right in coloured bands (likely band/artist names):

BILLIE A

SOME SHINE

BERATODONI

SIMPLEFT

FEEDER

OLLE D

THE MINISTER (MINISTERN)

ASCENDA

BELE

Bottom right inset:

THUNDER LOUD

(looks like a band or parody group)

Small top right text:

Norway NOK 14.00 incl. VAT, Finland Mk 13, 13.50 Denmark 20,-”

I’ll definitely be checking all the bunkers now to see if I can find a second copy!:grinning:

Might be a referral to Twisted Sister ? That Glam Metal Band from the eighties…

I was racking my brains trying to place the name, I actually thought it might’ve been Sisters of Mercy at first, but Twisted Sister makes more sense. Thanks!:grinning:

Feeder is on the list to the right, I’ve seen them live! But they didn’t show up until the mid 90s, so now I’m super confused. Bit of a time warp there!

If some of the other bands mentioned on the MKAY cover are real too, putting together a playlist could be a fun side project. It’s those little cultural nods that really ground the game in its time! Still haven’t found a second copy though :disappointed:

ZZ Top (Post must be at least 20 characters)

YMCA? (Womens Angry Satanic Division … :joy:? No, the W, A, S, and D keys control character movement in PC games).

Bathory … (Post must be …)

So this is supposed to be the “Okej” magazine front page #12 1989:

Can we dig some hints from this?

How about “Be no android”? A prudent warning given the circumstances, I would dare to say

No, ain’t we missing an “n”? And an excess “t” … Could have been fun, though.

Ok, a bit far fetched I admit, but there is a color correlation (not perfect but close) between words on the left and words on the right, e.g. could “Sound Reply” and “Ministern” be a reference to “Ministry of Sound”? Hmmm, it was founded in 1991

Perhaps we are overreaching here, but it could be fun if there really is something to decode here :grinning:

Actually, I think it reads “HAIROSVISCH” … “Aerosmith”?

W.L.K. could perhaps be E.L.O.

Thunder Loud → thunderstruck ACDC

WASD → W.A.S.P released “The Headless Children” in 1989.

I have this peculiar feeling that the devs are into heavy/dead metal :metal:

I considered R.E.M. - but I can’t see a logical link from W.L.K. to R.E.M. (e.g. Rapid Eye Movements in Swedish)

I looked up W.L.K. on abbreviations . com, where I found i could mean “weird little kid”, but that didn’t ring a bell. If we disregard the dots, it also is used in texts as short for walk, which might link to R.E.M. as a both are a movement.
