What EXACTLY Does Levelling Up Do?

When you level up, is it like most other games, where you get a bit more health, bit more stamina, bit more damage resistance, etc?

Or is the only benefit of leveling up the skill points you earn and what you unlock with them?

Also, is there a way to view your character’s stats?

Thanks much in advance!

When you open your map or inventory you’ll see tabs on top - go to skills (choose wisely, I recommend going for Salvage first).

You can view all your stats in Log tab.

I took health 3 levels then went right into Salvage. I knew about the skill points and skill trees. Just wondering if levelling up improves your character in other ways also. Thank you for the reply @0L0 !

The only benefit is that after reaching level 25 rivals start dropping experimental weapons. Other than that there is nothing gained, except skill points.

Wow. Ok, thank you very much.

Now, that I think about it, we need more benefits when we level up. Other games give benefits when you level up. Why not this game?

what do you think would be a good reward?

Slight stat increases across the board…health, stamina, sneak, damage output, damage resistance, etc.

Call it the person improving themselves as they survive to fight on more effectively.

not bad. Though of course leveling does give you the chance to do that. Maybe small rewards as you said. I don’t personally want that in game. But like a .5% stat increase every level sounds cool.

I think the change should be miniscule, but I agree something else could be rewarded with a level-up. I feel that stamina is always being messed with and still feeling too short even with two points sunk in to it.

I do agree that the whole levelling up system in games in general has always been a big suspension of disbelief.

GZ isn’t “other games”. The fact that you only get 1 skill point for leveling up is IMO more than enough since there are some games out there that doesn’t give you anything useful for leveling up, other than just showing one number higher char level.

However, to feel more “satisfying” when leveling up, here’s one thought;

Thought

You can find (pick up) but can’t use (equip) the following weapon before reaching following level:
Lvl 0 - Möller handgun (unlocked from start)
Lvl 2 - 12G pump-action shotgun
Lvl 4 - .243 sniper rifle
Lvl 6 - Sledgehammer
Lvl 8 - M/46 (Kpist) SMG
Lvl 10 - AG4 assault rifle
Lvl 12 - M/49 (rocket launcher)
Lvl 14 - Klaucke 17 handgun
Lvl 16 - Semi-auto shotgun
Lvl 18 - .270 sniper rifle
Lvl 20 - Baseball bat
Lvl 22 - HP5 SMG
Lvl 24 - AG5 assault rifle
Lvl 26 - KVM 89 light machine gun
Lvl 27 - .44 Magnum handgun
Lvl 28 - AI-76 assault rifle
Lvl 29 - KVM 59 light machine gun
Lvl 30 - .50 cal (PVG90)

I do like the idea of get 0,5-1% increase stats per level.
What I actually absolutly dont like is your suggestion to lock weapons behind a level wall. Maybe an increase of handling with a certain level but I’m against a level lock.

To be honest, I would vehemently detest needing to be a certain level to use the various weapons in the game. Finding, for example, an AG5 assault rifle and not being able to equip it would be the antonym of satisfying. Since I play the game taking my time to be careful and strategical, levelling up takes a long time for me. After playing for 181 hours, I am just now around level 22. The weapon would just remain in my inventory or Plundra stashbox for weeks and amount to nothing but dead weight for all of that time. I’d say that a better way would be to add level requirements for the different qualities of weapon, and not the weapons themselves. But I would honestly dislike that too.

Besides, it’s just too late to implement any form of level lock at this point. You’d take some people’s favourite guns away from them by locking it to a level above their own, and people would absolutely not like that. If it happened at this point, I would probably ragequit the game and never play it again because a rather similar thing happened to me in another game and I reacted in exactly that way.

No, a level lock would be no good. However, I like the other suggestions that weapon handling could increase, or a slight stat increase to health, damage resistance, endurance/stamina.

My thought is an example of what “satisfying” leveling up could be. It isn’t an idea nor even a suggestion, it’s just an example.

However, what i, personally, don’t like is players asking something for nothing. E.g x% stat boost on level up IS something for nothing. Since you’ll be leveling up either way to get the skill point, why add more beneficial features to the leveling up?

Though, what does feel satisfying, is when you put some effort in to gain the item. Best example is in-game challenges. If you want the reward at the end, you have to put some effort in. It’s not like the reward is just handed to you for nothing.

It’s true that putting in effort to get something is more satisfying and better than just getting something for nothing. But you already have to put effort in to gain weapons of at least 5c quality and above, especially Experimental weapons. A hard level lock for all weapons could have worked if it was in the game on release. I would have adapted. But to add one now? Personally, it’d be like throwing a wrench in the works.

If the developers are to make levelling up feel more satisfying for some players, it should be in a way that does not drastically change how current players are playing the game right now. It’s difficult for me to figure out how. Perhaps they could add more melee weapons to the game that are level locked without changing the weapons already in the game. Or new missions that you have to be a certain level for.

I agree. The most satisfying moments in the game for me is when I emerge victorious from glorious battle with machines that outnumbered me! Because like what @Aesyle said, I have to put in actual effort to win.

For me, playing the game is reward enough. I genuinely don’t make a conscious effort aimed towards levelling up. It’s just something neat that happens while I play, because the core gameplay is good enough for me. And that’s why I oppose a hard level lock on weapons; it would negatively impact the gameplay I enjoy so much.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that we get something for nothing. When the players with higher levels have more health and can sprint longer the devs could make higher tier enemies like fnix and apo class tougher. They could for example hit as accurate like after the april update.
It would also make sentce because at the beginning of your journey we are just a random teenager and not a soldier. That would reflect that we become more and more fit and trained while we fight the machines.

Making machines more accurate doesn’t necessarily mean they are tougher. What makes machines tougher is their bag of tricks (tactics). Currently, machines have small bag of tricks they can use against players. If machines would have much bigger bag of tricks (making them smarter), then we’d have a good challenge.

Or in other words: smart machine with 100 HP is much bigger of a challenge than dumb machine with 1000 HP.
