I actually like the idea that I had about a full set of protective gear. If each piece (head, jacket, pants, boots, and gloves) have you an additional 20% resistance then the full set would make you completely immune, which it should. As a trade off it could be bright yellow. In addition to making players look like a giant banana this could increase players’ visibility to enemies. Let’s say each piece increases visibility by 10%, adding up to a max of a 50% increase so that even with the stealth perks at max you can’t quite cancel it out entirely.
Gas resistance…and everything else that has a so called resistance perk needs to seriously be looked into. I’ve just picked up all the clothing schematics, and had a moment of reflection when in the crafting station.
I mean…how are the scales balanced here? What’s the specifics to the “perk”
-
With 1% Bullet Resistance - using basic percentages your telling me that out of 100 shots, 1 of them will not connect?
-
With 1% Fire Resistance - I spare myself 1 second of burn time during 1:40 of burning alive?
-
With 1 % Explosion Resistance - I take 1% less shrapnel…you get the idea.
It’s not enough, it’s just not worth the effort for what you get back in return. And complete flip side to this, is that the experimental helmet which clearly shows a vision module attached to it has no perk attached to it at all! Genuine bitter sweet to see an item like this thinking " that’s got to be a rare find with a module in a helmet " only for it to be no more than design.
And finally yes, Gas Masks. If in 1914, scientists could design a mask that can combat mustard gas during the war - then I’m sure the Swedish can develop one in the 80’s to provide more protection to the one currently available.
Speaking of gas, here’s devs explanation why gas mask doesn’t give you immunity, at 00:36:03,

I would love to see more specialized clothing, for more than just style. Wearing camouflage should decrease your visibility and wearing a helmet should give you some damage protection for example. In addition to my previously suggested hazmat suit, it would also be cool to see things like a firefighter set that grants a majority of fire resistance (say ~80% for the full set), a riot police set (maxing out at ~40% bullet resistance), and a bomb squad set (~50% blast damage resistance).
In a real war the use of poison gas is a war crime. They also mentioned that gasses get into your body through your mucus membranes, but those are all on the inside of your body, protected by the mask. Unless the gas is is getting in through your gaping anus then there is no risk of lethal injury. While it is true that many early poison gasses such as chlorine gas and mustard gas react with skin, modern poison gasses like sarin gas are neurotoxins that target the nervous system through the blood stream, meaning that is has to get to a place where our body exchanges the gasses in the blood. The only place like that in our bodies is the lungs. It’s also worth mentioning that mustard gas rarely killed it’s victims. It would cause the skin to blister which would be very painful and make infection a near certainty. Even with 1980s medicine, the use of antibiotics was widespread and would make dying of infection from an open wound (the most common cause of death in WWI) basically a non-issue.
There is no war. What there is, is occupation by machines and resistance (or assistance ) by player char.
As far as gases go, your examples all are based on real life gases. However, the gases used in game aren’t the same as were/are used in real life.
What concoction is used to make up the green gas - that is unknown. But concoction of yellow gas is explained in the game, in one of the missions.
I see where you’re coming from with this and part of me wants this “realism”, but at the same time I don’t want to force players to wear certain types of clothing because it’s better. I like that people can dress up any way they want without it affecting their gameplay (gas masks being the one exception). Makes for varied and (sometimes literally) colourful characters.
I’m all for freedom of cosmetic choice, but I would also love to see greater clothing functionality. It just currently feels like the game doesn’t adequately do either currently.
There is a lot of choice when it comes to clothing and IMO, that is more than adequate in the game.
Also, clothing resistances can be easily made better than they currently are by adding higher tier clothing resistance schematics into the game. So that players can choose their own clothing pieces where to apply (craft) bonus on, rather than being forced to use (wear) specific items just to get the bonus.
Currently, there are no resistance schematics that apply gas resistance to clothes but perhaps one day, we’ll also see schematic for gas resistance as well.
Yes there are a wide variety of outfits, but if you want the same jacket that you have, but in a different color then you have to just rely on dumb luck to get it, or that piece may not exist in that color. So I don’t think this game does an adequate job of allowing for freedom of customization.
Because getting damage from gas with a gas mask is not realistic
Ive never been in a warzone, nor have i experienced military grade gas attacks, but i do think youre missing a pretty important point.
Many weapons grade gasses can penetrate skin, eyes and other oriffices and even the best gasmasks arent 100% gastight. (You’ll need a over-pressure-mask for that level of protection) If a strand of hair or beard is affecting the sealing rim of the mask, you WILL have leaks. Thats one of the main reasons why youre required to shave while on military duty.
So even tho its quite irritating that one is loosing health while wearing protection, its not unrealistic.
I for one am annoyed by the fact that you never need to replace the filter… From what ive gathered while working with asbestos and PCB, a gas filter can get used up in less than 10 minutes, if the gas concentration is high enough. Do note, thats civilian professional filters, i have no data on military filters.
But theyre about the same size, with roughly the same content and function.
Same discussion topics merged.

So, I have some general questions about gas in Generation Zero that I feel have been left unanswered.
I figured this was the appropriate topic to do that in, instead of creating a new one.
With the updates and content added along with significant changes to how the gas mechanic works I feel it’d be nice to revive this topic since it’s after all, an important mechanic.
IMO, Gas Masks have been wonky since launch. There’s been numerous threads and video’s about them, and little conclusion has been reached wether they work as they should. I’ve made numerous experiments and video’s where I’ve tested wearing a gas mask standing in a gas-filled room (without perks) and not wearing one. The results have been inconclusive.
They’re supposed to offer resistance, but it’s not clear how much, or what kind.
Furthermore, there’s the Gas Resistance perk. What kind of resistance does it offer? Does it make health trickle down slower, or is there a delay before you start to take damage? What’s the intended effect?
And against what kind of gas? The static, yellow gas we encounter in bunkers, or the yellow gas deployed by Machines? The tear-gas fired by Hunters, or the purple gas deployed by Apocalypse Harvesters?
Cheers.
You know your on the same wavelength as me on this. Looking back when I built the Vanguard, the gas resistance perk was a genuine consideration.
But your bang on the money here, there is no definitive answer as to what resistance it provides and against what, and for how long.
@SR_Laura can you shed any light on the specifics to gas masks ( or know of anyone? ), thank you.

Hey, I hope this will help to answer some questions about how gas, and resistances in general, works in the game.
Resistances reduce the amount of incoming damage you take from various damage types. Ex. if you are about to take 100 damage from being in a room filled with gas a gas-mask with 20% resistance will reduce that damage by 20 points. However, in the case of gas, this might be hard to observe directly in the HUD. Gas damage is typically very low per tick, producing decimal values when reduced by skills, and as the HP indicator is rounded to the closest integer you might not see it directly. With this in mind. the best way to observe the reduction should be to spend an extended period of time in the gas and measure how much longer you survive in it before you die.
Skills are multiplied on-top of the apparel resistance and they stack. Ex. A gas-mask with 20% resistance + Chemist (10%) + Amor L3 (10%) + Vanguard (25%) = 1 - (0.8 * 0.9 * 0.9 * 0.75) = 51.4 % total resistance. Note that it can get even higher if you also have the Last Man Standing skill and stick close to a team of other players.
Some of the primary things in the game that deal gas damage are:
- Yellow gas in bunkers
- Hunter gas grenades
- Tank & Harvester close range gas dispenser attacks
Purple gas causes biological damage, this is used by Apocalypse Harvesters and it is not reduced by gas resistance. It also causes sickness which can spread to other nearby players.
I hope that clears things up a bit, regards Björn
Thanks tons, this really helps
I’d love to pick your brains on another subject matter if that’s at all possible.
Would it be OK to drop you a direct message?

Yeah, feel free to send me DM.
Thanks Bjorn, will do.
