Mysterious easter egg?

I stumbled upon this random stairwell in the middle of the forest just near the summit of Kilsberget. At first I thought it was some kind of terrain glitch, you come across stairs in odd places every once in a while.
But this one’s different, because if you ascend to the top of the stairs there is a silent but very damaging explosion, and you lose about 80% of health. Has anyone figured this out?
