Sound / audio get lost / disappear over time (footsteps, reload, etc)

Platform: PC

Description: After the most recent patch (late feb 2021), sounds often stop playing for a number of actions until the game is restarted. The game keeps playing non-affected sounds as intended, but specifically the following sounds stop playing altogether – walking/movement and reloading sounds. Probably a few less-critical ones too that I might be forgetting here.

Steps To Reproduce: No sure-fire way to reproduce; sometimes it is possible to play for hours without the issue happening. Other times it can happen within 20-30 minutes of gameplay. Sometimes the issue occurs after using fast travel to a safe house, but not always, so this isn’t a guaranteed way to reproduce the issue.

Yeah got the same problem, but they don´t reappear during session.Happens when i fasttravel to a bunker or church mostly, then the footsteps and reload sounds dissappear. Also with the rival announcements, and i mostly get them al back when closing the game and restart.I got the feeling it´s worse after the new februari update
Host or client : Multiplayer and solo
Specifications : Ps4 pro

In short, there are no reload sounds from what I noticed today. I haven’t played the game in a few months so I don’t know if this is a new or an old issue.

Just want to throw in my hat and say I experience reload audio sound effects disappearing on Xbox Series X after playing co-op for a while. I haven’t played solo much. I haven’t tried to troubleshoot and it may happen to all firearms, but shotgun sticks in my mind the most because loading it is a slow drawn out process. Hope it can be fixed soon. Cheers.

Yesterday I had the worst loss of sound. It appeared when the game crashed just outside of the bunker Vesslan. After the crash the char lost all sounds. I then restarted the game again but to no avail. I restarted my PC and verified the game files in Steam which resulted in no error. Then I restarted the game but the sounds were still missing. I created a secondary char but here also the sounds were completely missing. It seemed that the save was damaged due to the crash.

As a final measure I deinstalled the game, removed the game folder (not the save game folder) and installed the game again. After starting the game all sounds were there again.

This result is very confusing since I thought updates should patch things and don’t leave things as they are. I don’t know what the de-/reinstall routine did different but I got a different, more crisp looking icon on my desktop as well  :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I’ll observe whether sounds will get lost in the future or if this problem is “fixed” now.

I am having issues with the audio as well, this started happening 4/19.

PS5

Console says im up to date on latest version of the game. All DLC is downloaded.

Missing reload sounds and footsteps sounds
Missing rival announcement soundeffect
Weapon swapping soundeffect sometimes works
Weapon shooting soundeffect sometimes works
Currently all enemy soundeffects ARE working

+1 since few days on PS5 : no sound when reloading and walking

Eurêka ! I found the origin. It comes when cardiac sound is disable. Where i reactivate cardiac sound and reload the game, all sounds are back. So this is cardiac sound option the problem.

Xb1X and Xbox series x happens on both.
All weapon sounds disappear, sometimes footsteps. Happens random. Only sound there is, is when firing.
Just started fighting. This last time was fighting the one that has a flamethrower.
No screenshots is audio.
Hosting only one in world. I never MP only SP.
This last time was Xbox Series X

Has been happening for quite a while.

You’re not alone when it comes to the audio lost bug. It’s somewhat common issue and has affected many people. Topic about it: Sound / audio get lost / disappear over time (footsteps, reload, etc)

Merged with main topic. A fix for this is in the works.

As the title suggests, after a lengthy fight in the farmlands while on the infinite quest that is grinding for schematics, my AT-WAD just stopped playing the reload sounds. It fires just fine, but the reload is dead silent.

I’m experiencing this too. no footsteps or weapon reload sounds. Whenever I launch my game and go into the world, I have no reload sounds or walking/running sounds. It doesn’t happen after a set period of time, it’s instant. I’ve tried both solo and joined several multiplayer games to try and fix it. Here’s a link to video of the bug in my case here. I can’t seem to fix it at all.

Something is up with Vesslan. I went there yesterday and lost sounds again there. Not that bad like the last time I was there but still significant. Did a verify of game files but all went well.

Intro music not playing at all on XBOX startup until character select screen.

Wanted to confirm the lost footstep/reload audio bug is still on PC, both solo and multiplayer. Another forum user mentioned turning the heartbeat option “On” fixed it for them, so I tried it. It didn’t fix the problem right away, but after leaving it set to “On” and restarting the game it cleared up instantly for a character I have that’s had the bug for a solid week or more.

Great that the sounds are back, but I’m one of those people where hearing a different heartbeat (like in a game) makes my heart try and match it, so it makes me really uncomfortable/sick. I’ll try and limit my sprinting until it gets fixed, I guess.

This is why I’d rather have lost sounds then an annoying heartbeat sound all the time. If one can hear ones heart this loud a visit to the doctor seems appropriate anyway

Since I ran out of space on my systems partition I had to reorganize my SSDs. I bought a dedicated M.2 SSD only for games, reinstalled Steam and all games including GZ and I am still loosing sounds. This confirms that this is not a result of some rogue files or similar.
