Tanks are too hard

How much ammo are you stocking exactly? When I do a bunker loot run on the three Archipelago bunkers (Vesslan, Saltholmen and Skarven) as well as the Minken and Sorken command bunkers, I end up with over 2000 rounds of 7.62 ammo along with some grenades/rockets (with Salvage perk). This is more than enough for both 4 hunters and 1 tank, I assure you (since you also pick up 7.62 ammo along the way - the last Tank I killed got me 400 rounds of 7.62 ammo). :sunglasses:

2,000? I’ve never seen 2,000 rounds of 7.62. I just came out of doing the ship complex (Muskudden?) and the Minken bunker. I had more mines and grenades than I could shake a stick at, but just 300 rounds of 7.62. I looked in every room, and every box in every room, and unlocked anything unlockable. I pick it up 6 rounds at a time, and that’s with one salvage perk out of two possible unlocked. Occasionally, I find 22 in a box.

I’m reduced to trogging down to the search the soldiers in the Camp on the isthmus, and even they now only give me 9mm fmj pistol, which I don’t use…

The last tank I killed gave me 26 rounds of 7.62 and some Charlie G smoke cartridges, and took over 200 to take down. Dead Hunters give me maybe 8 rounds of birdshot (which I don’t use)…

  1. Do you have salvage maxed? If not, get it. This will instantly get you double ammo loot from ammo boxes and soldiers.
  2. Get to know the way to the barrack levels in the bunkers. There are tons of ammo boxes there. (If I get time later maybe I can post some videos that show the way…)
  3. All the green military buildings, soldiers on the ground and sometimes sheds (building with 2 doors in front) and containers have ammo boxes, and a good chance of 7.62. Saltholmen Naval Base is a good place with lots of military buildings and soldiers. Should be lots of ammo here, with only a few enemies.
  4. In general, try to learn which places spawn ammo boxes. For instance, I don’t loot houses anymore, since they almost never have ammo. But cars (especially police and army), sheds and military buildings/containers (the green ones) do.
  5. FNIX hunters usually give shotgun ammo, since they have a shotgun. Prototype and Military hunters usually give 7.62 ammo in my experience (but sometimes, oddly they give .44 or shotgun ammo).

You must think I’m stupid!

I worked out every suggestion you have made all by myself ages ago. When I go through a bunker, I search every single room and every box in every single room. I spend hours at it.

The soldiers now don’t give me 7.62, they give me SMG or 9mm fmj pistol rounds.

I have 1/2 salvage perks enabled.

I have to loot houses, since I am always hunting for medkits, of which I only ever have 10-12 Simples and five Standard.

I may have an ammo bug somewhere…

I don’t think you’re stupid, but I don’t know how familiar you are with the game yet. In that case it sounds very, very odd indeed… Just curious, are you on PC or console?

PC. I’m at level 14, but that progresses more slowly, since I like to make up my own missions. For instance I went from where I am (South Coast) all the way through unknown territory to Klinte to search for an AI-76 I had heard was there. Great fun, no contact all the way, massive battle in the church when I got there, found the weapon, didn’t like it, went searching for an Auto4 in the Muskudden Naval Complex. Wasn’t there (or it had changed into a “Worn” one - what’s that all about) so went hunting for obscure buildings in the mountains - found a small bunker full of machines and there was an Exceptional Auto4 in the office! So cool.

It’s not a lack of familiarity. I advance slowly, since I intend to spread out my game, but I’ve been playing since two weeks in. I search every coastline, every building, every road that seems to lead nowhere (often bunkers at the end). But in all my struggles, lack of 7.62 ammo is the worst.

You play exactly the way I do - slowly and curious to explore. :sunglasses: Well, I hope you have some better luck with ammo in the future. Maybe you should switch to an Auto-5 if you have better luck with 5.56 ammo, who knows?

Nothing to say - I’m just moaning…

It does that to me as well. Just last two days I was getting heaps of 5.56 in the hundreds from hunters and tanks. I mean 100+ Each pack of ammo and I don’t carry a gun to use it. Most times if I’m holding the weapon and open ammo boxes it would give me mostly that ammo. Some what my secondary hk5 and my Glock ammo. Or 32. Before I left 5.56 cause I was getting tons of 7.62. I found the Al-74 so it was a no brain swap. But it’s weird. I think it has to do with the area your in as well. The games confusing but it turns into a treasure hunt in itself to find ammo.

My strategy is to go to places I remember that give ammo cans. Place the ammo you want in the gun and hold it just Incase you didn’t know and drop a good number of them down. I get 10 rnds each 4x grabs. While I’m looting those areas I tend to make about 1-2k ammo that’s 3 different ammo types so 800-1200 for one gun mixed AP fmj. Make sure to go to any near by military big green storage sheds.

And this is why I prefer coop when my wife decides to play. We can take a tank down faster by Agro confusion and a lot of time she tends to get my ammo and I hers. So we get about 400-600. I’ve got about 1-2k just for one gun doing this and my other strategy with coop.

I hit the upper military bases.
•Airbase is too spread out and thanks to the bikes a lot faster grab. Has I think 2-3 green large storages
•Artillery is hands down best, only has one large green storage but a ton of Mili buildings.
•bunkers with safe houses make it fast run and I can’t remember the names of the bunkers that had the small concrete storage units that hold weapons/ammo. But there are a few, west and north.

Also jump in a randoms game could help with another run

Soldiers for me also now gives mostly pistol rounds or smg. But I have so much ammo for my main character that I sometimes dont’t bother to loot at all except downed enemies or when friends are in need. But that’s good also since I play mostly mp with friends and are host. Because of the bug that leaves most boxes empty for clients they can take my spoils. But we attack every tank we see just because we like the challenge. And often we get more ammo back than we spend. Not always the same type. Unfortunately. And we are 2-3 players total. In mp a tank isn’t that hard. Just outflank it.

Have to be honest and say that it’s not unusual for me to be running around with 2000-3000 7.62 rounds and a further 1800 SMG and about 80 or 90 .50 rounds

Though I do find you find more the further North you are the better the ammo drops seem to be.

I’m thinking of giving the 7.62 a rest for a while and carrying the 5.56 plus SMG to see if the drop rate for 5.56 increased from absolutely nothing to something appreciable, if for no other reason to gauge how much attention the game pays to the weapons carried.

I don’t think tanks are hard at all. At least not one-on-one. Fighting a single tank is really easy if you have good cover, like a house or something between you and him. Just peek out and shoot off his main weapons, and he’ll just stand there defenseless as you finish him off.
Out in the open, or accompanied by wingmen, a tank is hard, and he absolutely should be! A tank should be intimidating, and your default action should be to avoid him, unless you have a good team or a good plan. Part of what I love about this game is the fact that you can run into overwhelming battles you just can’t win, and it’s your choice to retreat or engange.

@Bootie ‘s problem of not finding ammo is a mystery to me. I have 2 points in salvage, and I find plenty of ammo. I always try to carry 8-10 full stacks of 7,62 mm, 8-10 full stacks of buckshot or slugs, 5-6 full stacks of 12,7 mm and 2-3 full stacks of rockets, and this is usually no problem to find.
I’ll say though, that my playstyle used to be slow and careful, but now I’m running around much quicker, and I seem to find more ammo this way.
Slow and careful doesn’t really pay off in any way.

I don’t understand it either - I literally find some in a base in the first three containers and then all the others have ammo I don’t use. I have one point in salvage, but that just gets me 50% more 9mm fmj pistol ammunition, which I never use! What’s the point? If there is no 7.62 in the box, who cares if you get 50% more of it?

I took down a lone FNIX Tank today, first thing, from 250 metres (never laid a glove on me!) and he gave me nearly 300 rounds of 7.62, and I was a pig in clover all day - totally changed my game. But I killed 14 Hunters (three of whom ambushed me and eleven who joined the mad subsequent chase) in a pack, but most of the damage done with Charlie G, and I ended with way less than I started with. IN fact today I killled two Tanks, 25 Hunters, around forty Dogs, and two Harvesters, and I’m back down to fifty rounds, so I am being depridated in all combats.

On the plus side, I played for well over four hours (more like ten!) and can go back to Normyra and restock next time I play. That’ll get me back up to about 300 fmj and 150 ap. Then I can go forward.

It may be a bug in my installation. That’s the only explanation I can think of.

8-10 stacks!!! I’ve never seen that much. The most I’ve ever had was today and I had a full stack of each type and three-quarters of another of each - four slots. Wonderful! But I’m back to normal, sneaking forward, avoiding every contact unless I am certain I can win. Mind you, that FNIX might have respawned and if it’s still alone I might see if I can get into the same firing position. But all my Charlie G’s gone too, so I’d have to snipe it with rifle fire. That takes half an hour or more.

The first Harvester I killed gave me a hand grenade and 8 rounds of buckshot. Bring on the next update!

@Bootie Hmm, strange. It seems to me the game in some way knows my preferred ammo types, and it let’s me find them the most. 7,62 mm may be the one I find most of. It’s everywhere, in chunks of 15-50 rounds. I mainly use the AI-76, the Sjöqvist shotgun and the .50 sniper rifle, and ammo is easily found for all of them, along with tons of 9 mm pistol ammo I don’t need.

My tip for finding 7,62: Go to Sävered Church. Every time I go there, 3-10 military hunters spawn outside, I pick them off from the tower and the doorway, and most of them carry a nice bunch of 7,62. I usually gain more than I use on them.

I’ve been there twice today and killed everything twice, Mostly birdshot and 9mm pistol from the Hunters and a bit of smg - you see, they’re really just not trying! I was under artillery bombardment continuously the first time - was there a dual purpose? there was not, not a one.

Bizarrely I sent my third character to go and pick up a 4* pistol I’d dropped in Normyra, and he found more 7.62 per box and more boxes with it than I did. He’s not even at level 1. Weird…

When I dropped the pistol, I was doing a shopping run, and found exactly what I told you I would - Normyra from front to back: 350 rounds of fmj, (300, 'cos i already had 50) and 210 rounds of AP. That’s with one ammo salvage unlocked.

I think tanks are great. Not to call you out in any way, but they are supposed to be the baddest mob; If you are in open country engage them over the rise of a hill or it will hurt! Learning tactics for them hurts yes, but a huge machine with crazy firepower vs a squishy target - you have to learn what works. I engage them solo and find a place to shoot off the guns, then avoid shockwave to finish them. You can do it!

Hmm, in the latest video by Tene, it seems Tanks are not firing its machine guns if you stand moderately close to it - how is that so?
I find it a little odd that it doesn’t blast you to oblivion with its guns in that scenario. I know it can sprint now, but don’t you think it’s kinda buggish that the Tank does not fire its guns when you stand right in front of it?

Maybe it had a brain freeze. Me and a friend assaulted the airbase recently, and we fought hard against a FNIX Tank that would target us with it’s machinegun the second we popped out from cover. I tried to get close to it, but it shot at me regardless of range. One of the toughest fights I’ve had, now that I think about it.
