The Final Showdown Update (12th dec) - rumours and discussion (wiki)

What do you think will the end of the story be and how you do you think will it affect the game?

Will we destroy FNIX?
Will the soviets then stop or will we have to defeat them, too?
Will we see the credits and the game is over or may we keep in playing?
If we defeated FNIX and or the soviets, will there still be machines to fight? If yes, why?

Will there be a cliffhanger which maybe gives an open end for a possible sequel?

It might be that we arrive at a “point-of-no-return-mission” where FNIX gets destroyed when a chain reaction of gas explosions takes out all the underground bunkers and servers in the network.
After that we are zapped back to a point in time before that end mission so we can keep playing.

Generation Zero 2 ?

We all know that writers of a story can always come up with the premise that not all FNIX copies were destroyed. For instance, that a bootable FNIX disk is hidden somewhere on the Swedish islands waiting to be found and for some poor soul to boot it up.

Oh I had a funny idea…
As it will somehow probably take part in the mountains region, we will have an obvious option to get back to keep on fighting: the delorean!

Idk… It’s hard to believe that GZ really comes to a story ending that ends the game. Ending this Story would either mean that we defeat one or all opponent factions which logically should mean that the corresponding forces will vanish or be deactivated. By that the main reason for playing GZ would be gone and it wouldn’t make sense to be able to play on.

This would could also mean that a player or a Party of players could lock their progressed worlds for playing on just for fun. No good idea.

Or we get an open end which let’s us keep on fighting with some knowledge that it some day maybe could go on in a sequel.

With the first option we would have a story driven change in the world of GZ which we never had before.
With the second option idk if everyone really would be satisfied with.

Of course, in any case a sequel would be possible, like you said… Another location in the world where FNIX survived, an evolution in the soviets AI, a lonely disc with the FNIX AI OS which a kid finds and tries to run it because it thinks it’s a movie or a videogame…

There are many possible ways.

if people ever got to east of the mountains region, you will find only tree limbs to be picked up 4 wood & edge of map that looks like a slice of cake edges

Has anyone thought that the resistance is over run and the whole island, again, is taken over by the machines and even though we complete the final mission you then have an option to start a new world or jump all over the map to hunt and destroy machines like we do now.

But I just have the feeling this update has been brewing for longer than it was just started after the last update. I am hoping for something as epic as the intro of the reaper, for those that did the DLC first, in this finale. But the game has been heading more towards base building/defense and I can’t think of anything exciting if we go more that direction.

But then again, the developers have kept us on the edge of our seats for hundreds and some of us thousands of hours, odds are in their favor they will continue to do so till the end.

So here is a thread covering all the lore:

The russian nesting dolls tell us the story from Tatianas point of view.

Will we finally meet her?
And what about the machine that helped her?

And finally, will we fight Bolshakov in the showdown?

How do think this could work?
We never had humen characters that were fighting for or against us. So could a final enemy “Bolshakov” be a vehicle or machine with Bolshakov as passenger?
Or even something totally new? Maybe a mix of soviet and swedish technology, but with space for a human commander (driver/gunner)… Like a tank (or even reaper), upgraded with some soviet weapons and the nano-repair-unit?

Like you said earlier that island is approx. just as big as Himfjäll. But I would love it to get such a big island to explore even if there are not so many POI’s to be found.

A military pontoon bridge would be nice.

I agree with your guess. Kilsberget seems a big enough area to accommodate such a large refinery (1) complex. And the revamps that are going to happen most logically will be there where there are wide open spaces.
(1) I think it’s a refinery

My imagination from the beginning of GZ 2

*Snipped from Helldivers Aftermath Resurrection of FNIX *

Militärt Forskningslaboratorium FOA53 bottom floor of old secret area.

In the connecting corridor between the new part of the rebuilt MF FOA53 and the old secret part, which was only uncovered a year ago, two technicians make their way to a cavern that was blasted into the rock. Inside is a large Cray super computer.

“Do you think we can get the thing running again?” Peer Gustavsson asked his colleague Arvid Lindqvist. He mumbled back:

“We’ll see, it doesn’t seem to have been damaged by the explosion.”

“Yes, that’s right. The four teenagers did a great job. The whole MFM here was completely destroyed. Only the back part was almost intact. The computer was hardly damaged. Let’s see.”

Their steps sounded hollow in the dark corridor. Finally they reached a security door. Both had to hold their code cards in front of the scanner. A laser beam scanned the cards. A humming sound was heard, a display changed from red to green and the two were able to open the gate. They entered a room that was located in a large rock dome. The ceiling was made of naturally grown rock. In the glow of the diffuse lighting, the ceiling was barely visible.

In the middle of the room stood a huge computer. It consisted of several L-shaped segments, about two meters high, which were put together to form a ring. Arm-thick cables led to the control cabinets in the back of the room.

“Let’s go then,” said Peer Gustavsson.

He sat down at a terminal that was in a niche. He put down his tool bag and took out a current tester.

“Arvid, check if there is power on the line!” he said to his colleague.

He also took a current tester out of his bag, went to one of the control cabinets and opened it. He put the test electrodes on various copper rails. Finally, he took out his tool bag, pulled out a pair of thick rubber gloves and put them on. Then he took a rectangular object out of the bag.

“Take your hands off, I’m just changing the fuses, they’re all blown,” said Arvid to his colleague Peer.
Then he pulled the old fuses out of their holders one by one and pushed new ones in. A red light lit up in the control cabinet.
“Looks good,” said Arvid Lindqvist.
“Then fire it up!” said Peer Gustafsson.
Arvid Lindqvist walked along the control cabinets and switched the heavy switches one by one. In the background, fans started up, which began their work with a quiet howl.
Peer Gustavsson switched on the screen. When Arvid Lindqvist pressed the main switch for the computer, a few lights on the computer lit up and flashed in an irregular pattern. The screen went white. The message EPROM Mode appeared at the bottom. Peer Gustafsson typed something on the keyboard. The display on the screen changed and showed the computer’s BIOS. Peer checked the values. He entered another command on the computer and the display changed again.
File system check in progress.
File system checked, synchronization and defragmentation required.
Duration of synchronization, estimated time 5 hours.
Duration of defragmentation, estimated time 7.5 hours.
“That’s taking too long,” said Arvid. “Let’s do it tomorrow. The box seems to be running.”
“OK,” said Peer. “I’ll shut it down first.”
Peer entered another command, read the display and finally turned off the screen. The two of them turned off the light and left the room again.

In the dark, light bulbs suddenly lit up in a certain pattern. Red lights turned green or yellow. The computer’s hard drives started up with a whirring and whistling sound. Fans started up. The hard drives made unrhythmic, whirring and clacking noises. Lights on the ring segments flickered.

FNIX awakes…

Someone forgot to turn off the wake-on-lan settings.

When exactly does your story take place… Or how much time went by after the end of GZ and when this room was uncovered?

I would love to have it set about 10 years later, maybe from 1999 on. It would be an interesting time compared to GZ 1s settings, as there would be some inventions that could really mean a change.
Windows 95 and Windows 98 released in that time span, some important mobile phones were released that year, WiFi became important since 1997…

This could give FNIX a lot more possibilities which it of course would have to learn first.

That’s the teaser of Helldivers Aftermath

Seven years have passed.

Seven years of happiness, seven years of peace.

We lived our lives

We built a house, studied and worked.

Amelie gave birth to a son

We enjoyed our beautiful little piece of earth

We loved each other and looked forward to each new day.

But then I had inadvertently opened Pandora’s box

First, strange messages appeared on our computer

“PAY ATTENTION TO THE SIGNS!”

“BE CAREFUL!”

We had thought that we had ended it back then.

How foolish we had been to think that we had destroyed FNIX.

FNIX had only been sleeping.

And now it has awakened and is more powerful than ever.

And we have to stop it

Pay attention to the signs
Be careful!

It’s out there…………

With the mountain region getting some updates, we could be seeing missions leading to the island just west of the region. When SR_Carni mentioned the size of the new area, it may not be land mass size, but the number of missions is not as large. Could be a stronghold of just Soviet machines and they are making landings on the West coast of the mountain region. It does have a large port on that side. Could be the reason for updates in the region.
This would give us more chance at Soviet tokens with just Soviet rivals/machines in the area. That would help balance out the regions that have just fnix machines and rivals. It could also be a way to introduce a new Soviet machine. The same way the Reaper was introduced in the game way back when we found it in the hanger on the island. (Wishful thinking maybe)

I had some more thought about this, and then I remembered I had documented another slightly altered map from Anya zone, where the streets of Salthamn were shown.

Here below I enhanced the text on the map so it is readable.

Now look at CIVIL DEFENSE SALTHAMN - CONTACT LIST

  • Civil Defense Coordinator
    Gösta Bengtsson, Forellbacken 3 0853-203 56

  • Ass. Civil Defense Coordinator
Anita Sjögren, Olle Fiskares väg 3 0853-203 60

  • National Guard Coordinator
    Peter Hammargren, Måsvägen 1 0853-203 33

  • Municipal Coordinator
    Anna Jonsson, Vintergatan 8 0853-202 90

It has all of the 4 streets that are on the updated map. It pays-off to document stuff.
So it’s more likely that the houses of these 4 main NPCs somehow mistakenly were circled on the wrong map.

You said that 6 couldn’t be it because you’ve been there, but I have been to all small islands including 3, 6 and 7. Island 8 seems only connected on a small narrow path.

What do you think?

I can’t remember to have been at 3, but 6 and 7 of course.

8 didn’t came to my mind because it’s so far away…and connected to 1.

I still believe it’s 2.

I hope you are right and it is island 2. But since island 2 is as big or maybe even bigger than Himfjäll, I wonder if the new island is one we can’t see yet, but big enough to accomodate an area worthy to the last update. :coffee:

I will also hope it is the Island #2. That the mountain region has no revamp is pheraps a clue that this island could be. But as you said. It is bigger than Hjimfäll. I will think it is #7. Because it is not so big and not too smal for placing ther a a camp or a hidden bunker. It is very close to the mainland and tht could be a reason for the Machines to go there and build pherhaps a tunnel or a makeshift bridge to the mainland. We will see.

Hi @Gysbert , just wondered - I’m not entirely up on recent events here - if the encircled areas in the sea south of Saltholm necessarily have to be islands? Could it be ships at anchor perhaps serving a function for the resistance?

The announcement of the final update mentions a new area - not specifically a new island

True, but an area we haven’t been on. What else can it be, the mainland?
Edit: O wait you are right, it can be an new attached area on Ostertorn.

Not islands but houses in Salthamn, because of the street names on the map. But Initially (on first map the one with only 3 circles) they could’ve been ships or landingzones.

Edit: Here two cut-outs

That shows that the circles fit the brown houses. These are the houses of the 4 people I listed a few post earlier.
