The very, very last 7 years anniversary update mission

I know that this game will get no further updates. That’s okay - I’m more than content with what I got for my money. Seriously, despite my grumpy comments from time to time, I never questioned the value for money regarding GZ. So I’m not asking for more.

But … if a very final mission should pop up, when all other missions have been completed, I would like to find a keychain and a battery kit that open all locked and unpowered doors. There are quite a few. I would start with the door at the top of the shaft tower at Annagruva. And then I would take a final trip around the map, probably just to find a lot of empty rooms. But, at least, then I would know :smile:

And maybe, behind one of these doors there is a console that allows us to get back control over the swedish machines and gives us access to a hidden RTS-mode.

You activate the console, the screen zooms in onto a display before you, the command system turns on and gives you an isometric perspective of östertörn.
“Welcome back, commander!” it says (with the voice of fnix). “Awaiting your commands”.

You get the ability to build outposts at the control points and to control tanks, harvesters, hunters, runners and seekers. Now there are also control points in the north coast, marshlands, mountain region and archipelago, especially at the landing sites of the soviets, who turn them into bases, plus some more.

There are even some hidden production sites that allow you to produce new machines at certain locations. Many sites are already destroyed, but can be repaired with ongoing progress.

So maybe initially you’re just able to use the remaining machines to defend yourself and to produce prototype runners and seekers with a basic setup.

You’ll be able to unlock upgrades for the machines and the bases, depending on their class (other weapons/modules/attachments) and if you reached a certain upgradelevel you become able to upgrade to military, fnix and even apoc class.

Of course you’ll need ressources.
Seekers have an additional use. They can locate ressources on the map. Ressources are metal, electronics parts, fuel cells.
All of these ressources can be found randomly in every wreck, no matter if it’s a car, a truck, a jet or helicopter or swedish or soviet machine. It’s some kind of recycling, with some guaranteed values against bad luck.
You need to use harvesters to harvest these ressources. Logic, isn’t it?

To become able to produce hunters you have to reach a specific level for a base, then the hunter-spawner becomes available.

Harvesters and tanks instead are produced at specific fixed locations on the map that have to be found/unlocked and repaired to get access. There could be a hangar or hidden elevator that spill out the produced tanks and harvesters, which then have to move to where you want them. Every region could have at least one of these locations, which can get upgrades, too. (Weapons/Attachments/modules/classes)

A reaper on the other hand could be realized as a superweapon with a cooldown and a limit of 1 at a time. It would be produced the same way as tanks, in an unlocked production site, and therefore just can be activated in regions where one of these sites are unlocked. It can move anywhere, but that takes time of course. Activating a reaper at one site also holds the current production and priorizes the finishing of the reaper.

Your task: defend östertörn against the soviet machines, rebuild the defensive systems and clear all regions step by step.

The safehouse at the south coast near Tonsberg fort. Next to the silos there is a bunker with a locked door. Inside a couple of ordinary tanks. Behind one of them there is a desk with a PC. We have to get to that console - it is hiding in plain sight :laughing:

Someone will probably mod the game in the near future, although the code seems like thin ice, easily breakable.
Many things could be added, maybe even fixed if the person knows programming…

But what if a note was left in some of the empty rooms behind the locked doors?

Some big movies get a “The making of …” kind-of-documentary a few years after their release. The director, the main cast, the scriptwriter, the producer and other important persons tell their stories about the movie. What worked, what went wrong, what was left out …

I have absolutely no doubt that the initial ambitions about the Generation Zero story was much bigger than what ended up as gameplay on our consoles. Some of the locked doors was kept locked because they were intended to lead somewhere someday. Obviously Annagruva would have had an elaborate mining tunnel system underneath. The Swedes just love to dig tunnels and mine the mountains. Islands were left untouched. Fire stations would have played a role in evacuations. Apartments would have been accessible and played a role in the story.

I would absolutely love to find notes from the scriptwriters, programmers, art directors, composers, producers and all, telling their stories, ideas, and stuff that just might have made it into the game had the circumstances allowed for it.

I remember, that after the final boss fight in Doom I came to a room with pictures of the people involved in creating the game. I don’t really remember the boss, but I remember the gallery of creators :slightly_smiling_face:

These notes could be the absolute final set of collectibles :memo: … “Letters from the Historian” :love_letter:

I want to know what’s in bunker 66(6)! - And we don’t get a conclusion to the apple murderer! We find him, but don’t get to pursue him! I definitely want more. But I get it, this has to be the end. Maybe its not forever, but its the end for this version of the game. If a Part 2 is made, maybe some of those things will be answered!

In GZ, like in “Do androids dream of electric sheep”, most of the population has been extinguished and no animals except a few birds are to be found. I got no real animal pet. I didn’t get an electric sheep either. But I did get an electric dog … kind of :laughing:

GZ+40 - or what the sequel might be called - could be set in the near future with humanoid androids. It could be frightening realistic - and frightening relevant.

I can hardly imagine how the story could be continued, to be true. It’s not just the story, GZ lived from. The story is quite poor and with so many untold parts. It’s more the setting. Sweden (other than somewhere in US inspired locations), the 80s, these machines. A different setting would be risky different game.
So I’d guess the first steps should be different perspectives in the same setting.

We could be a regular soldier or a scientist at first, experiencing the cataclysm day, who later becomes part of the iron church faction.

Or what if we’d get more to know from the soviet point of view, including what happens after the elimination of fnix?

So we probably could even start as a soviet spy, hiring at the swedish military/ foa or ssp and then experienced all the above and beyond…

If fallout series are make out of some sort 1920’s dream of 2200, GZ is just more or less a 1990’s dream of 2010. but i’m not so sure which one is really better, a ‘futuristic’ old folk’s tales, or a realistic near future plain story?

GZ’s setting in 1989 Sweden was something new and worked really well, especially for us who’ve been to Sweden and can relate to the culture and surroundings. But the story ended - half done some might claim.

Honestly, I have a hard time imagining a continuation from where we ended - or even from where we began (like Half-life Blueshift and Opposing Forces). The game didn’t become a Blockbuster, and the player base have moved on and might not take a chance with a sequel to a game that had a number of issues.

So, either something new with kind of a legacy reference to GZ but still completely self contained, or nothing at all.

Seems like when the story n background became too realistic, it’s not a positive factor for a game, coz it’s hard to expect new n surprising contents.
Maybe except mmo shooting games, becoz who care what’s the story when all you need to do s pull the trigger :smirk:
