Me and my friend also suggested bycicles! I think they would be pretty convenient, there quiet, they only use your stamina like running I think they’d be great
I personally think the game could feature a range of unlockable vehicles, including bikes and mopeds.
However, I’m very meh towards the idea of piloting a mech. Perhaps as the ultimate, final vehicle, there could be some sort of prototype for a manned army mech:
One reason why cars aren’t in the game (yet), is because the devs were (are) afraid that it would ruin the atmosphere, because players would just rush past everything.
I personally think that it would actually add something to immersion and atmosphere.
Imagine:
You are on long drive in a dark and rainy night. But you forgot to fuel your car, so you become stranded. You then make your way to a nearby farm and get some fuel. On the way back to your car you see some lights moving in the forest. You take out your binoculars and check what’s going on. It’s a group of hunters. You hide in the bushes until they have gone past, then you run up to your car, refuel it and continue your drive, just in time before the hunters come back.
You are driving around on a sunny day when you are suddenly ambushed by a group of runners. You careen of the road and flip your car. Still a bit disoriented, you suddenly have to fight for you life.
You are scouting out a town and see that two tanks are guarding the it. So you drive back to your hideout and load your granatgevär into the trunk. You drive into town and park your car near the tanks. You get you granatgevär and start the fight. After the two tanks are finally defeated, your health aswell as your supplies are depleted. But the fighting attracted a lot of machines. So you run back to the car and race through the streets, dodging machines. You breath a sigh of relieve as you are finally back on the open road and see the robots getting smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror.
You are driving, and suddenly see blue flashes ahead. You get out of the car and take out your binoculars. You see a crashed military convoy ahead, the emergency lights of one of the escort vehicles still flashing through the night. You sneak up with your sniper rifle, taking out the two runners guarding it. After you cleared the road and took what useful supplies were left, you continue your drive, wondering what happened to the soldiers as you pass by the wrecks.
I don’t know, sounds pretty atmospheric to me.
That does sound atmospheric, but I doubt most players are gonna play like that. Pretty sure most of them would use it to crash into a bunch of machines and blow them up pretty fast
That would only be a problem if players would be able to joyride every single car in the entire game world.
If you’d have to go back to home base to get a new car? Not so much.
Particularly not if vehicles would fill additional functions, like a mobile field radio and storage box. Fat chance that people would spend an hour looting homes, stuffing the car full of stuff and then lose everything by using it as a battering ram.
You are right that it would have to be balanced.
Things like player damage if you crash, machines that can dodge, cars making a lot of noise, emps, things like that come to mind.
Just let us ride the available bicycles instead. I would prefer that over cars.
You are driving along looking for a town to loot, when out of nowhere, a tank fires a rocket at your car and blows it to bits with you and your coop buddies in it. (Cannot use Adrenaline shot, the vehicle is destroyed. You must re-spawn at a safe house.)
Because of course, tanks are easy to miss and as they’re implemented right now, they fire missiles on sight and hit instantly?
A motorcycle would probably be a better idea than a car, as people have mentioned players would just ram machines with them. The motorcycle would work like the bike, but it would go faster, consume fuel, and create plenty of noise. But I do think the addition of motorized transportation would ruin the atmosphere. Kind of like the reason why No Man’s Sky has no cities in it, it would ruin the atmosphere of the game.
Has anyone looked at the scale of the map? It’s huge, but only because you have to walk there. It’s about eight miles from top to bottom - the distance you travel in your car for a new pack of fags. It’d take you five minutes. And if you can’t get off the island, what’s the point?
For cars to make sense, the map’d have to be fifty miles wide. It’s a non-starter.
I’ve noticed that machines tend to leave parked cars alone. Moving cars, however, seems to end up either in the water, upside down, in flames, or with dead people leaning up against them. Yes, let’s go drive some cars
I started Generation Zero not knowing exactly what to expect, hoping I didn’t come to an untimely death at the hands of evil robots. As I walked around for the first time I saw something that delighted me; A police car. My first thought was to hop in it and drive to safety. It was a little disappointing to discover the car was just a set piece.
In real life, if I was stranded in a deserted country overrun by hostile machines the first thing I would want to do -(after I got done crying in a corner)- would be to get in a car.
It seems to be a controversial subject to add functional cars to the game. I can see several points that make it sound like a bad idea. It might detract from the simple guerrilla warfare aspect of the story, it may make transportation too easy, etc. But in my opinion the positive possibilities of adding functional cars greatly outweigh the negative ones.
Success when using cars would depend on how one used them. A good strategy could score you an easy win, but strategies executed improperly or planned hastily could end up in disaster.
There are a lot of nice features cars could provide. One of the biggest could be an extended and portable storage space. Ever had too much stuff to carry? Needed to pick up that med kit but had so much stuff you know you’ll need later? Just throw some in the trunk and drive to the next mission!
Another could be a luring device. What if you could put a brick on the gas pedal and send the car roaring down a street, causing all the machines around to chase after it? When they got close and shot at it they’d get an explosive surprise.
For bold players a fun strategy to defeat Tanks or Harvesters could be ramming your vehicle into their legs! If you used a small sedan you might take out some armor, but if you rammed a cargo truck into one it might fall down and shut off for a short time.
I have a few ideas on how vehicles could be acquired.
Car keys could be found in some houses and used for a car found in or around the garage.
of course they would need to run on gasoline, which could be found in the gas containers already scattered everywhere. The fuel would run out and you would have to plan according to your current amount.
There could be an Auto Mechanic skill set that when fully unlocked could allow you to gather car parts to customize and repair your vehicle.
An upgrade could include stronger engine mufflers to dampen the noise level.
Of course the vehicle would alert enemies due to the noise and heat, so when hit the car could degrade and lose parts and health/functionality, much like the machines themselves. If surrounded by enemies and shot in the right spot the car would explode, reducing your health by 80% or more.
These are just a few ideas, and like I said, there are many other interesting and fun possibilities for the addition of working cars.
Thanks for reading, I hope to see some ideas and feedback from the community.
Dude thats pretty smart. More items u can collect like different types of wheels for off road, speed and armoured wheels.
U can collect metal plates from machines or different cars, u can attach metal armour from tanks to the car u own.
Different engines to reduce sound or gasoline, get more horsepower to get up on mountain and get more speed.
U did say cargo tuck think about u can put other cars or robots (try to hack robots u have killed or take part to repair the car) on the trailer so u can take material from and repair parts that have been damaged. But if the truk woll get damage so u cant drive just take the car out and flee to safety or drive in fight. The engine u get from the cargo truck will only have power to drive with just a not functional car on the trailer, later u will need to upgrade the engine so it get more horsepower so u cant drive with more car on the trailer.
This is just ideas I did get from reading your text. I hope that u will read it and get more ideas and write it here. Thanks for the time u read this text thanks.
U should need item to craft engines or find the engine. When u holding the engine u move slow and cant use guns.
I want if this will be in the game there should be more spiders like one that jump on the car and detonate a electric pulse and the car engine will be turned off and damaged. A spider that will jump under the car and drain gasoline like a parasite. A spider with spikes on it’s back so if cars drive over it the wheels will be damaged. A tank rhino that start rushing and tackel the car.
while i don’t want the cars, i know a lot of people didn’t want bikes and we got them
unfortunately i think cars are too complicated for them at this time.
maybe eventually
Considering that a car explodes in the game when you shoot at it. I wouldn’t use one. It makes noise and will attract robots. And the will shoot at it. I rather have a skateboard. Can take up one or two slots in inventory.
we should be able to honk their horns as a way to lure Machines
I love those ideas! The image of a car being covered in a swarm of tick bots sends shivers down my spine!
I’m skeptical about crafting specific items though. Crafting usually requires the gathering of materials, which might start to clutter the inventory even more, and become too complex.
What if a certain skills unlocked would enable one to discover the parts already constructed? They would have different conditions (dilapidated, good, new) like gun attachments.
I do agree that cars would add a significant level of complexity, along with a “swarm” of new bugs. As for the complexity, cars would be 100% optional. I imagine that everything related to cars and the operation/maintaining of them would be skill based. no one would have to even touch the “Auto mechanic” skill set.
I like the prospect of luring machines with cars. better yet, what if there was a component, salvaged from any machine that when attached to the car would make the machines think it was one of there own?
Cant beat 'em? Join 'em… Then betray them and beat 'em.
