The Final Showdown - An Update On Generation Zero

Greetings, Survivors!

It’s been a while since we released the August 2024 Update, and many of you have been asking what’s next. Well, we’re here to answer that question today.

Over the past six years, we’ve added tons of new features and content to Generation Zero; Base Building introduced a home to customize and defend, Soviet Machines joined the fray as a new faction, the Companion helped us stand up to the enemy, and the Vulture posed a formidable new threat.

In turn, you’ve spent the last six years destroying machines, hunting Rivals, and keeping the Resistance alive. We’re truly honored that you’ve accompanied us on this journey for so long. Everything you’ve achieved has been leading up to this point.

With this in mind, we’ve arrived at a special and decidedly bittersweet moment:

It’s with the utmost love and tremendous pride that we announce that we are now working on the last update for Generation Zero.

We feel now is the right time to finalize our vision for our beloved game and give it the sendoff it deserves. So, without further ado, let’s talk about this last hurrah, our magnum opus – the Showdown Update.

In the Showdown Update, we are concluding the story arc that we’ve been building towards throughout the main missions and in-game lore. The story of Östertörn is reaching its third act in this mysterious, intense, explosive finale and the Resistance will need you once more! Here’s a small sneak peek:

Most of the Showdown Update will take place in a new area that you haven’t been to before. This new area will not be as sprawling as Himfjäll, but it will give us the space needed to tell the last part of our narrative. You can look forward to exploring new terrains with a unique feel and many bits of environmental storytelling, just like you’re used to! In preparation, we advise you to gather all the Soviet Nesting Dolls collectables and catch up on the attached lore.

Concluding the story in this new location is not the only focus of this update, of course; we’re working on including as many bits of community feedback as we can, too. We’ll be adding three new Experimental weapons to round out the catalog of base game weapons that have EXP versions. To allow you to unlock all skill upgrades and complete the endgame experience, we’re uncapping the skill points, allowing you to unlock all skill upgrades and complete the endgame experience. We’ve also been working on new cosmetics, which you will be able to earn in various ways. Lastly, as always, we’re introducing more Quality of Life improvements and fixing lots of bugs.

As you can see, there’s a lot in store for you as you experience the conclusion to your journey in the game. There are a few more surprises awaiting you in Östertörn, but those will be for you to discover yourselves.

The Alpine Unrest and FNIX Rising story expansions are not required to complete the new missions, but having played them will provide more context to the story. The narrative will revolve around the Resistance, FNIX, and some characters you already know and love.

As we get closer to launch, we’ll talk more about the update, but for now just be advised to keep a lookout on our channels for more hints and, eventually, the release date.

Generation Zero has evolved so much over the last six years and we can’t wait to experience this final chapter together with all of you, our players. Thank you.

The Generation Zero Dev Team

Questions you might have

  • Will the Showdown update include a paid DLC?

    • No. Everything in it is a free update for everyone who owns the base game.
  • What happens after the update?

    • Our dev team will move on to different projects within Avalanche Studios Group. Our community spaces will remain active and supported for the foreseeable future.
  • Will I still be able to play multiplayer?

    • Yes. GZ’s multiplayer mode is peer-to-peer hosted, meaning it doesn’t require servers from us to connect to your friends.
  • Is GZ2 in development?

    • We are not developing any sequels at this point, but there are definitely more stories to tell in the GZ universe and a return to the IP in the future is not off the table.
  • Where can I find information and support going forward?

    • Any communications will still happen via Discord, the GZ forums, our website, and our social media channels.
  • Will the game still be available for new players to download and play?

    • Yes.
  • Can we expect any community events or activities in the future?

    • Yes! We will continue to care for and highlight our amazing community every chance we get.
  • Will there still be technical support for the game?

    • Our customer support will stay active throughout 2025 and if we decide to discontinue it after that, we’ll let you know well in advance.
  • How will bug fixes and patches be handled moving forward?

    • There are currently no plans for further patches, but we’ll be closely monitoring our channels following the release of the Showdown Update to determine whether a hotfix is necessary.

Thanks for the game.
It was fun.

:star_struck::sleepy:

It’s hard to say my feelings.
I hope the update will be cool and will add what the game needs in a good way.
I’m sad that all the ideas and feature requests will end with this update. No more hope for any optimizations to reach the full potential of GZ.
And I’m lucky that we’ll finally get more story and more to explore, even a new location.

I’m excited about what you’ll deliver. And when.

Some more questions:
You say there is no server that affects GZ, but what about everything related to the Apex Connect Account? What about the procedual missions? What about issues like recently when something affected the info box on the main menu and the sharpness/resolution of the ingame map?

Could you provide a list of the fixed bugs (with this update) and the still persisting issues like the safehouse bug I’m still living with?

Is the skill cap opened right from beginning or are there any prerequesites?

Will there be a final stream as “project-GZ-end-party” with all the known partitipants to round up the event? What are your (SR) final thoughts about the end of GZ (1)? What did you have in mind when creating this final update?

Finally:
Thank you for this fantastic experiences in the many many hours with GZ.

I strongly hope to see you (or at least systemic reaction) again with a sequel to GZ in future.

Edit: Oh, one more thing.
I guess the skill system revamp is off the table or is it part of “opening the skill cap”?
Same goes for any further (even already begun) region revamps (i.e. mountains region) and more regions to get bases and a tyrant in?
Sorry, but somehow it feels unfinished and therefore somehow like a forced stop… Nothing you could have wanted.

That will be good. along with the new experimentals.

I would like to see some more tyrants over time, like a revamped Wolf or harvester.

Thank you Carni for informing us, and good job.

Well, that’s what we’ll never get.
End of updates.

I know its too bad. I wish they would have added at least 1 more.

Wow, thank you so much to the entire dev and support teams for an amazing experience over the last few years! And congratulations on the achievement. It was clearly a labor of love for you all, and that made GZ a truly unique product! Keeping things open instead of monetizing everything, choosing peer-to-peer for MP so that hopefully new players can continue to discover the game in the future (and grow the community), being so responsive to the community - all of these choices made it a memorable and positive experience. In all honesty, as a middle-aged gamer with lots of demands from work and family, I had almost given up on finding a game that I would want to carve out time for. GZ was the exception though, and I have enjoyed the combination of action and quiet exploration more than I would have expected! Thank you for bringing me back to gaming, and for building such a memorable world!

It’s a sad day, but we all knew this day would come. I really appreciate the time and effort that was put into GZ over the years. I have tons of great memories and I hope your next project would be awesome! Thank you so much Devs🤝

Mmh I must think over a present I got from my friends on my birthday last month.
A tourist information of sweden, two dala horses and a nice metal sign of GZ, inviting tourists to östertörn

Did they know it’ll end soon?
Do they want to invite me to experience my own generation zero in the real sweden?
 :joy:

As others said we all knew this would happen, we were lucky it did not happen before.
But there are specially 2 main questions, considering its been said its the “Last Update”

  1. Are we going to get the revamp of the Mountains regions ? Feels weird to be the only place with no “Upgrade”

  2. What about the few “gamebreaking bugs” still present from earlier Updates and the ones that will probably happen after this Last Update? Do the devs at least guarantee they will fix them?

Some bugs are not gamebreaking and are there since 2019, like the echo of dead machines, but what about the 2024 bug that gives low FPS even in NEXT gen and newer computers?

Dear Generation Zero team.

You have done a magnificent job. I’ve been lucky enough to have known and played this game since spring '19 and I had no idea that a game could capture me as GZ has done, only possibly rivalled by Half-life in my younger days. There has been ups and downs as the game progressed, but your efforts have been absolutely impressive. I rarely play games these days, but I will most certainly set aside time to complete the story. Something I’m looking very much forward to.

And thank you for doing closure on the GZ story instead of letting it slowly fade with an open end into oblivion. Let’s go out with a bang, and I so much hope that old as well as new members of this forum will come back here and celebrate the grand finale :fireworks::tada::pray:

Now, let’s grease the weapons and stock up some ammo ! I’ll be ready …

It’s been a long time coming. I suspected the devs would «wrap up» GZ soon. I just hope that the final update and expansion will be good. It’s been a long time since this game took a direction that wasn’t exactly to my liking. I haven’t played for a long time, but I’m gonna have to pick it up again when this releases I guess.

Let’s hope for a worthy end for GZ’s story and development. And also, that the final version is as good as bug free.

It will never be anything close to what I had hoped for GZ’s future if you’d asked me 3 years ago, but I accept this is just the way it went.

Early years GZ will always have a special place in my heart, and also all the warm memories from my engagement on this forum, especially in the first 2 years. Those were the golden days.

Yeah a long and exiting journey comes to an end. Hopefully it will be the big bang and im courious for the new location and the terrain it will be placed. I played the game since December 2019 and i really love that game. It had inspired me to write two stories and more. It was allways a nice and tensing journey on Östertörn. In the last time i been a little quiet on the Forums, wrote here and there but the more i read the comments. At the moment i’m very busy with a crime story that plays in an Area like Östertörn where Police Inspector Liv Svensson ( yes, it is Liv from the Midsummer incident) has to solve a case with an uncannny murderer that who is up to mischief in the Archipelago.

It was always fun to be with the Forums, had nice talks with many of his members.

I will say many, many thanks to the dev team who created this artwork of game.

The only thing what lasts is to raising a glass of champain of all of you devs, gamers, an forum members

I’m secretly hoping that they give us the ability to spawn the Reapers and Vulture in different regions in this last update. But thank you for a wonderful game. I’m super excited to see what’s coming and to finally put FNIX down!

Perfect moment for modders next year. Please give us the tools for developing our own stuff like new regions, bunkers, etc…

Dear GZ dev team,

I have and always will have loved this game, and will continue to play it, even after its final update. I hope you make a sequel to this game, as you have said its not off the table and that stories remain to be told. I hope you use ideas from the forum as inspiration for new robots, and make it just as stunning as the original game. Thank you for making this game, and good luck in your future projects.

Sincerely,

Ok, sad news, but all good things come to an end. More or less, because players will be playing for a while. And the GZ community is one of the best I’ve found in my years as a player.

Please, in a last act of defiance, do something useful with the resistance people! Caravans of bikers transporting goods between bases, shooting robots from afar, even Anita with her wheelchair on top of a tank and blowing up machines like a backyard mecha, but get these people out of the hotel basement!

And maybe fix some bugs like tracking resistance bottles found or how long your longest battle lasted, but that’s a minor thing.

I’m glad to see the OG Vets coming out to have their final say. My only hope is that when I bring the Vanguard out of retirement, her final curtain call is worth it.

May I wish all those playing out the end of GZ,

Good hunting.
